My Boy Lollipop

Millie Small's singing career began when she was still a teenager. She became a popular artist in the West Indies and was one of the few female performers to be involved in the branch of R&B music that grew in those islands, called 'Ska'. Her early local successes were made as half of a duet called 'Roy And Millie'. The other half was called Roy Panton. She recorded as half of 'Owen & Millie' (Owen Gray) and 'Jackie & Millie' (Jackie Edwards). These record releases were on labels like 'Studio One', 'Island' and the legendary 'Blue Beat'. In fact she was to become known in the West Indies as the 'Blue Beat Girl' and 'Ska' is still known by many people as 'blue beat'. Millie was brought to Britain during 1963 by Chris Blackwell, who later made an effort to promote Reggae in the UK. Her first UK release 'Don't You Know' owed less to her Ska background, being accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Lord Rockingham's Harry Robinson. It didn't sell too badly but Millie's unique high pitched style wasn't enough to get it into the chart. However, her second release was a stronger song and was based more closely to the West Indian rhythms she was accustomed to. It became a massive hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching number 2 in the U.S. chart as well as in Britain. Sadly, despite the great success of the record, it did not set a new musical style in people's awareness. 'My Boy Lollipop' was simply regarded by most record buyers at the time as an item of delightful, but lightweight 'pop' . (Incidentally the record is alleged by some to have a young Rod Stewart on harmonica). Although she had a couple of further minor hits, she never managed to consolidate her famous smash. But never call her a one-time-hit-wonder. Her "My Boy Lollipop"-album has some great songs, and it deserves a re-issue on CD. To please the fans it was released in 2007 in Japan on high quality vinyl.

Millie for music lovers and record collectors.

As for me "My Boy Lollipop" is an unforgetable tune. It remains popular on parties, no wonder there is a karaoke version available. For music collectors it is not hard to get a copy from the hit single "My Boy Lollipop". It was a huge worldwide hit, many vinyl still around. Collectable items from the hit single can be found in the "picture sleeve" issues from around the world. Italian, German, Japanese covers can be found for usually less than 20 $ for a near mint condition. Also the album "The Blue Beat Girl" can be found quite easily, recently I did pick up a copy that was still shrink wrapped! Do your search and you will be rewarded! Finding cds is quite harder. There is a few re-issues featuring extra tracks. You should be carefull for the price. I saw a 45 offered on Amazon for 99 $ and that is really expensive unless it should be an issue on one of the Jamaican labels.
Very interesting is the thing she did with her ... boys. "Millie and her boyfriends" is a very nice ska album. The different singles and the EP's (extended play singles with 4 tracks and usually a pic slve) are worth your money. Also her "Decca" single "Readin' Writin' & Arethmetic" belongs to my all time favourites.

Millie Small's live video from "My Boy Lollipop"

Millie live, she moves around like a natural talent bring her "My Boy Lollipop". Now you consider this ska, or bluebeat? I consider it "very Millie". Though this song was originally a small hit sung by "Barbie Gaye" it's Millie's version that made the song unforgetable.

Time Will Tell

On this album she is already more mature as you can see from the cover picture! It is a different sound than her "my boy lollipop" album but it is a real recommendation! The Trojan label stands for reggae, ska. But this is rather calypso, a Millie you need to discover if you like Jamaican music. Different than her hits but real charming.
