I Nominate Mimi as a Linchpin
Ranked #1,147 in Squidoo Community, #116,334 overall | Donates to Acumen Fund
My friend Mimi is a Linchpin
After the release of Seth Godin's book, Linchpin, about the people who make a difference in the world, we were challenged to nominate a linchpin in our own lives. I chose to nominate my friend Mimi who makes a difference in my life and the lives of many others.
Mimi prizes human connection. As a rheumatologist, she sees her patients as friends and equals and treats them with compassion.
As a Mom and community member, she works tirelessly for those that experience discrimination.
Her relationships with her kids and her spouse are deep and inspiring and she is a caring friend to many.
Disclaimer: This is not Squidoo MiMi (also a linchpin), but my local friend Mimi. Do you have a linchpin in your life? Read on to learn more about Mimi and linchpins.
A linchpin...
* Inspires (changes others) through who they are
* Gives more than required without guarantee of reward
* Is not attached to outcome
* Acts, despite fear
* Is resilient, persistent, and flexible
* Discerns which work they should be doing
* Prizes human connection
Mimi is a Doctor
She makes a difference in people's lives every day.
Mimi is a rheumatologist. So, first of all, she is in the business of healing, especially people with chronic illnesses. Many of her patients live with chronic pain, and Mimi has to make them as comfortable as she can.
But more than that, she listens carefully to each and every one of them. They have to deal with all of the regular stuff of life, as well as their illness, and need someone who understands what they are going through. Mimi is the perfect person for the job. She has empathy and compassion in abundance.

Mimi's Favorite Quote
"I have never regretted
being overly generous.
I have many times regretted
not being generous enough."
Mimi - Wife, Mother & Friend
I cannot really know how Mimi is as a wife and mother. However, I have long admired the relationships she has with her husband, Larry, and her two (almost grown) children. Family is top priority for Mimi and her openness and honesty make for intimate family relationships. Nothing is off-limits for discussion or sharing in their home.
Mimi is also a sister to 12! As 12th of 13 kids in her birth family, her brothers and sisters are scattered across the county but she manages to stay connected.
I can speak of Mimi as a friend. We are members together in a small faith-sharing group of nine women. Time and again, when someone is experiencing a stressful situation, she is the first to say "How can we help?" And she is often the first to offer a suggestion. For the past two Christmases, she has provided opportunities for us to help those in need, whether an elderly patient with two young foster children, or a domestic abuse shelter. She makes things happen!

Mimi - Human Rights Advocate

One of the great causes of Mimi's life is equal rights for all, especially lesbians, gays, and transsexuals. With her involvement in the local PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) chapter, she works tirelessly to provide support to other parents dealing with the issues that their children face in the world. Her empathy, compassion, and enthusiasm serve her well in this job.
She has also inspired many of her friends, by bringing awareness and encouraging us to do our part for those who are being discriminated against.
At PFLAG, they believe that "only with respect, dignity and equality for all will we reach our full potential as human beings, individually and collectively." Find out more about PFLAG and the Human Rights Campaign.

- This is really a lovely tribute to your friend Mimi. I read this and was impressed by all you wrote. Mimi sounds like a wonderful person for sure, and I really like people that are humble, versus the ones that have to shout to the world the good that they do. This lens is blessed :)

- So many people don't seem to know how to connect anymore, yet it is the cornerstone of a healthy society. It is a wonderful treat to know someone like Mimi, who is able to encompass the art of connection with all she meets. And it is amazing that she does this as a doctor! We all need a Mimi in our lives.
