Albizia Julibrissin - Our Southern Mimosa Tree

The beautiful Mimosa Tree was probably the first tree that I knew by name. It was a very important tree during my childhood because this was the tree where our tire swing hung. I would spend hours swinging and thinking in that swing or climbing up in it's branches.

Years later, when I went to Jacksonville State University and studied Botany, I learned so much more about it and learned to appreciate this beautiful tree in a whole new light. It was also the name of our yearbook. Of course, all of us who studied Botany called it our "Albizia Julibrissin" instead of just Mimosa.

We have several Mimosa Trees in our back yard and I am enjoying them very much. I look forward to the summer when the Hummingbirds find the blossoms. I am sure they enjoy the Mimosa Tree as much as I do.

Look At The Delicate Mimosa Blossom

The blossom of the "Silk Tree"

mimosa tree blossom

The Mimosa is sometimes referred to as a "Silk Tree"
The blossoms do remind me of threads of silk.
It is also called the "sleeping tree"
because the leaves fold up at night.

The Leaf Of The Mimosa Tree

Look at all the shades of green!

mimosa leaf

Our Mimosas are around the pool and make me feel like I am deep in a jungle or somewhere in the tropics. Of course, they do make a mess and my hubby will probably get a strong urge to cut them down one day but until then I am going to enjoy them.
Mimosa Trees are not typically used for landscaping because they don't live as long as most trees. The Mimosa Tree usually does not live more than 50 years.

The first thought that occurs to me whenever I see a Mimosa flower
Is revelation of the unknown, in a sudden burst of radiance and power.

my grandmother use to have a mimosa tree but it kept repopulating all over so she cut it down. I have a fenced-in area that is 27feet in length, 16 feet in width and 12 feet in height. i want to put a mimosa tree in there with climbing roses on the fence. i am afraid it make dozens of others. what should i do???!!!!!!!!

Hi Not sure if I have a mimosa tree or not, the powder puff flowers are exactly the same but the leaves appear to be a bit different. Mine looks more like a very large bush, it is about 8 feet tall (grew from a tiny nothing a year ago!) with very large weeping branches that span about 15 feet wide. It js certainly not large or sturdy enough to hang a swing from.

The Mimosa Cocktail

A Southern Treat

Mimosa Cocktail

Some Southern ladies occasionally enjoy a Mimosa Cocktail which is Champagne and Orange Juice. It looks very pretty to garnish with an orange slice. I have been to many a party that had a fountain of flowing Mimosas. There is something wonderful about placing your Champagne Flute in the fountain and watching this delicious mixture as it fills your glass.

Ahhh.....I had to set the stage for this picture so have my glass of orange juice and a bottle of Champagne. Should I go ahead and make myself a Mimosa?
Won't you join me?
