Neurolinguistic Programming in Business & Selling (1)

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) was developed in the early 1970s by John Grinder and Richard Bandler at the University of California at Santa Cruz. They had observed that people with similar education, training, background, and years of experience were achieving widely varying results. They wanted to discover why certain therapists could deal with their clients and get very rapid results while other therapists seem to need months and years. In doing this they discovered certain mental processes we all go through to make decisions and changes. They theorized that the brain can learn the healthy patterns and behaviors and that this would bring about positive physical and emotional effects. Their work came to be known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming. According to Ken Strong NLP can be used to change the way we interact with our reality, with huge implications for every area of our lives. He argues that we build up an arsenal of often-unconscious ways of reacting to certain situations in our lives, and often those reactions have become outmoded and unproductive. If we identify and become conscious of those unproductive reactions, we can choose to change them, thereby removing roadblocks to our progress in creating the lives we really want. But how do you use NLP to persuade another person to buy or try your product or service, or change his/her behavior? Ken Hogan answers this question explicitly in his book "Covert Persuasion: Psychological Tactics and Tricks to Win the Game". His book provides help in using the powers of NLP in personal and business life. Covert hypnosis or persuasion is the ability to subtly communicate with another person's subconscious mind by bypassing the critical factor of the mind. As it often takes place in the course of a seemingly regular conversation, it is also known as Conversational Hypnosis. An amusing example of using covert hypnosis was presented on TV by Derren Brown where he influenced his friend to buy a BMX bike. The bike was never mentioned in the conversation, however it was hidden in the messages, such as "Let me tell you how I buy(K) gifts....by (BIKE) creating the strong feeling of desire .... they BeaM eXcitement for it."
Another amusing example may be presented in education where Derren demonstrates the ineffectiveness of telling people something that they must not do (such as "Don't push that red button!") without giving further instructions and disregarding the fact that our subconscious mind doesn't make difference between a negation and a positive statement.
Kevin Hogan claims that the central key in using covert persuasion is to find ways to elicit people's individual processes. These processes may be in the form of beliefs, personal assumptions, tendencies and values, as well as of their strategy for making decisions. Hogan proposes eight strategies that could be helpful for utilizing covert persuasion. Firstly you should identify a targeted problem. This is something your prospect no longer wants to experience (e.g. high costs, poverty, debts). "Omega Strategy" is a persuasion strategy that doesn't try to improve or enhance the value of a product, but is solely focused on reducing resistance.

Covert Persuasion - Using Fear as a Sales Strategy
Hogan brings a "fear" as a good example on how to influence people effectively because fear is something we are all wired to fight or flee from. A good example here would be a sales campaign by T. Harv Eker. Eker is very well aware of neurolinguistic programming and he is using it in his program when changing Your Money Blueprint. Eker uses fear scaring people to death when claiming that "If your money blueprint is not set for a high level of success, you will never have a lot of money. And even if you somehow do, you will most likely lose it!" Hogan claims that the key factor of persuasion is giving instructions or steps when directing or influencing behavior. Simply telling someone to do something "Don't push that red button!" or "If your Money blueprint is not set on a high level of success, you are doomed!" is destined to fail because it doesn't include instructions. However, if people have heard those phrases thousands of times already (like "Smoking will kill you!"), they are vaccinated against it, and they will not pay attention this petition any more. Hogan claims that at first we must scare people to hell and then give them specific instructions to follow. Therefore, Harv Eker gives us instructions such as "The good news is that you can actually reset your money blueprint to create natural and automatic success". Hogan advises that if you are going to use fear in a communication in order to encourage someone to buy your product or service, you must also include step-by-step instructions in you message in order to be successful. Thus, based on neuro linguistic programming, Eker states that it is insanity doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. According to Ken Strong the NLP assumes that what appears to be "wrong" with someone is actually the perfect response to their current map of their world or your so-called "money blueprint". By changing your map or blueprint (that is, how you think about the world and your place in it), you can change your behavior. Hogan brings an example from a research where 69 percent from those told to imagine their car being vandalized, said they would return to the car to check if the doors were locked. Where people experience anticipated regret they tend to take action to prevent the regret.

How To Sell Real Estate With The Power Of Mind
Dantalion Jones claims in his famous book "Mind Control 101" that the general public is either in almost total ignorance or skeptical of the great truths of thought transference and covert hypnosis. Thus, people do not pay attention if these strategies are used by sales persons. Sometimes even people who use these strategies are not aware of using them. As a matte of fact, we constantly attempt to influence other people for some reason (e.g. in education; when motivating a prospect to buy a specific product or service; creating panic to sell a certain stock).The desire to change others' minds and behaviors is one of the main functions of communication. In the early days before Jose Silva had developed his Silva Mind Course he figured that there was some sort of direct mind-to-mind communication which could be used between people who were total strangers in order to affect their thinking. Dantalion Jones tells us in his book "Mind Control 101" an interesting story about experiments conducted by Rev. A. M. Creery with his four children. "One of the children was sent into an adjoining room, the door of which was closed. Other children then thought of some object in the house and wrote the name down on paper. When they all silently thought of the name of the thing selected, the door was opened, and the child usually appeared with the object selected, in her hand. Currently, mind control is used and taught by many sales people all over the world.

Jim Francis writes about remote influencing (subjective communication) in "The Super Mind Evolution System". He gives an example where he used subjective communication when selling real estate years ago. This was during a property slump and nobody in the office was making sales except him. The method is to program your mind (as you go to sleep) to wake you up when it is in contact with the largest group of likely buyers. Then you mentally explain to them how great a particular property is and why they should buy it. You repeat your address and who you are at least 3 times, so that the message sinks in. According to his experience the next day potential buyers will contact you left, right and centre to view the house. You then use subjective communication once again to help to sell it to one of these people and you finish off by visualizing a sold sign on the property. You can use exactly the same process to attract people to your advertisement in Internet. Potential clients glancing through your adds in Internet suddenly notice your ad. It tends to leap out at them and they feel compelled to contact you. Without the subjective programming they would probably have ignored it. Jim stresses that you cannot influence people against their will, you should note that they will only buy this property if they are genuinely interested, though somewhat undecided. You just help them make up their mind! You cannot use subjective communication to make an unwilling person buy something. Your customers have to be initially receptive to a purchase of this kind. It should be blessing for them.
