In most best case scenarios, the griefer is banned from the SMP server quickly and the damage is minor. At the worst, griefing will destroy an entire server. Usually the most effective way to combat griefers is to have an Admin/Op check up on what the players are doing by using the teleport command. When a griefer is found, a /kick or /ban command should be used. Sometimes, the griefer might change their username to evade the ban. If this happens, an /ipban is used on the hackers ip address. Sometimes, a griefer can escape this command as well by using a proxy to change their ip. When this is the issue, it is probably a good idea to shut down the server for a while so the griefer gets bored and leaves. A way to stop griefers from entering a SMP server while no Admins are on is to use Spawn Jails. If built properly, this will ensure no player will be able to enter the map unless an op lets them. Some players consider this a rude practice however.)
