First Things First - Start With The Basics
Review Our Basic Application Guide
How To Apply, And Learn To Love, Mineral Makeup!

Our Most Important Tips: The Three P's
Step 1. Prime the Skin
Cleansing and exfoliating are the basics of most daily skin care regimens and are a very important step in mineral makeup application. Wash the skin with a gentle cleanser to remove surface skin oils, dirt and debris. Exfoliation aids in the removal of dead skin cells and can be done as simply as gently scrubbing with a cotton washcloth, naturally by using a bit of honey mixed with brown sugar and smoothing over the skin or by using an over-the-counter brand name product. Be sure to search out products that are targeted toward your skin type.

Step 2. Prepare the Skin.
The most fundamental step in applying mineral makeup prepping the skin. It's crucial to moisturize prior to application. Why? Because most mineral cosmetics contain no hydrating properties and naturally absorb moisture from the skin (especially surface skin oils- which is good!). Moisturizer will help keep minerals from looking dry & flaky on the skin. Even if you have oily skin, this step is still important - try an oil-free moisturizer or one made specifically for oily skin. And be absolutely certain your moisturizer is completely absorbed before applying your minerals.

Step 3. Practice!
Very few people get things right the first time out - and as they say, practice makes perfect. Play with your minerals! Practice your technique over and over, try different application methods and discover what works best for you. Just like with anything else, the more times you do it, the easier it will become and the faster you'll be able to apply your minerals every day.

Helpful Hints
Dry Skin Hints
If you have dry skin, you may need to take extra care with two of 'The Three P's' - priming and prepping the skin become exceedingly important steps for mineral makeup users with dry skin. Exfoliate twice a day with a very gentle exfoliator and be sure you're using a moisturizer created for dry skin.

Oily Skin Hints
Oily skin may benefit from an extra step or two to prevent the need for reapplying your makeup throughout the day. Try applying a layer of your mineral veil/finishing powder underneath your foundation for extra oil absorption. Blotting tissues are handy for blotting excess oil and will help keep touchups from looking 'cakey'. An extra layer of a matte, translucent mineral veil over your foundation should help keep the oils at bay, as well.

Acne-Prone Skin Hints
Concealer is your best friend! Concealers that are green-based and will help in neutralizing blemishes. Apply your concealer before your foundation so it blends well, and touch up over foundation if necessary. Follow up with a matte, translucent veil or finishing powder to complete the cover-up!

Under Eye Circles, Skin Discolorations, Rosacea Hints
A variety of tinted concealers (usually known as 'correctors') will aid in minimizing particular skin flaws. A yellow-based concealer will help reduce the appearance of purple or brown flaws (such as under-eye circles), green-based correctors diminish redness while a yellow-orange corrector will help neutralize brown discolorations. Be sure to blend your concealer onto your skin and with your foundation so that you have no apparent lines of demarkation.

Contouring Hints
Bronzers, illuminizers, highlighters and 'warmths' are wonderful complexion boosters & can emphasize or minimize skin qualities as you choose. Remember this rule: light colors draw attention to while dark shades detract from. Use bronzers and warmths sparingly along your jawline, under your cheekbones, down the sides of your nose, even across your collarbone and around your decollete to create the illusion of stronger lines and more definition. Use highlighters and illuminizers under your browbone, on your eyelids, on the apples of your cheeks, even swept on your shoulders and the base of your throat or cleavage to accentuate lovely attributes.

Fun Tricks & Other Uses For Your Minerals:

1) Liquid or Cream Mineral Makeup: Blend your Mineral Foundation with your favorite moisturizer for a healthy, 'liquid' application.

2) Nail Polish: Tap your desired color Minerals into a small container. Dip the brush of any clear or colored nail polish into your minerals and apply to nails. But remember: Minerals containing Ultramarine Blue are not safe, by FDA standards, to apply to nails. Please check your labels.

3) Lip Color: Tap your desired color Minerals into a separate container. Dip a lip brush onto your favorite lipstick, lip balm or lip gloss. Swirl brush into minerals, blending with your lip product. Apply to lips for a long-lasting effect. But remember - Mineral Makeup that contain Ultramarine Blue should not be applied directly to lips or nails. Please check your labels.

4) Most Mineral formulations are multi-purpose: try your Bronzer as an Eye Shadow or your Blush as a Lip Color! But remember - Mineral Makeup that contain Ultramarine Blue should not be applied directly to lips or nails.

5) Sunless Tan: Blend your Mineral Bronzer with Body Lotion, Body Cream or Aloe Vera Gel and apply all over your body for a temporary sunless tan.

6) Body Shimmer: Blend any of your Shimmery Minerals with Body Lotion, Body Cream or Aloe Vera Gel for a shimmer effect anywhere you want!

7) Hair Highlights: Blend any of your Minerals with styling gel or mousse and apply to your hair in streaks or 'chunks' for a dramatic effect!

Troubleshooting Mineral Makeup Issues:

Why does My Mineral Makeup look dry/flaky/crusty?

It's important to cleanse and moisturize before applying your Minerals. If you have excess oil on your skin or your skin is too dry, minerals may 'cake' onto your skin, rather than blending into your skin. Remember to allow your moisturizer to dry completely before applying your Minerals. If you apply one thick layer of Minerals to your skin, it will appear cakey, too. Apply in light layers until you reach the desired coverage.

Why does my Mineral Makeup look thick/funny/pasty/gray?

First, make sure your moisturizer is completely dry before applying your Minerals. Make sure you're using a natural bristle brush, applying in layers, and buffing the Minerals onto your skin. If you're using the correct techniques and still experience thick-looking foundation, you may have the wrong shade. The color is 'sitting' on your skin instead of blending in. One of the great things about Mineral Makeup is that it can be customized for any skin tone and shade. You may need a lighter or darker shade to blend into your foundation to create a customized shade just for you!

Why did my Blush/Bronzer go on with a big streak?

You loaded your brush with too much product! Remember, Mineral Makeup is highly pigmented. You need to apply your colored minerals in light layers until the desired effect is achieved.

Why Do I Have To Reapply My Makeup So Often?

If you're finding that you have to touch-up your mineral makeup several times throughout the day, it may be because your skin needs extra exfoliation. Minerals will 'flake off' along with your surface skin cells throughout the day if you haven't properly exfoliated. This is particularly true of those with dry skin. If you have oily skin, you may want to try a layer of mineral veil or finishing powder underneath your foundation to absorb the extra oil that may be keeping your minerals from adhering better to the skin.

Can I Use Mineral Makeup If I Have Acne/Rosacea/Skin Conditions?

Absolutely! Many Mineral Cosmetics will actually help improve the condition of your skin! Many Mineral Makeup formulations include ingredients that are good for your skin and help heal and promote healthy skin (please check your product ingredient labels carefully)!

Can I sleep in my Mineral Makeup?
While many companies advertise that yes, you can 'sleep' in your Mineral Makeup, it's not recommended to do so on a regular basis! Their point is that it won't harm your skin if you forget to wash it off one night, as could many mainstream cosmetics. Don't make a habit out of it - stick to your normal skin care routine!

We hope we've covered all the bases with our tips, hints, tricks & troubleshooting guidelines. Mineral makeup is such a healthy and beneficial alternative to traditional cosmetics that we want all women to learn how to successfully apply their minerals and love the way they look!
