Mini dessert inspiration - the Brown Cow Sundae

Mini desserts (aka dessert shooters) are smaller versions of about any dessert you can imagine- they're just made in a smaller package. But, you don't have to sacrifice taste and presentation when you make these mini desserts - aka dessert shooters. They're just as flavorful as their full sized counterparts and easier on the waistline too. In fact, here's an article with some The top five dessert shooters for a dieter.

Making a delicious dessert shooter is quite simple. All you need is a small glass (2-5 ounces or so) suitable for the mini dessert, the dessert ingredients, and a bit of creativity.

My 94 year old Mom requested "something chocolate and small" after a filling dinner one day. Enter the birth of the Brown Cow Dessert Shooter. This Squidoo lens will guide you through making your very first mini dessert shooter.

Come read my article about The best dessert shooter cookbooks on the market for even more inspirations. And, for more information about diminutive dessert shooter glasses, check out my latest article in the dessert shooter world: Dessert Shooter Glasses.

The first thing you have to do is find appropriate dessert shooter glasses

I find some of my dessert shooter supplies at the Good Will or Salvation Army store where I tend to pay just under a dollar for some pretty cool dessert shooter glasses. But, if you're hoping to step up your game and really go for a special presentation, check out some of these dessert shooters glasses from Amazon.

When shopping for dessert shooter glasses, look for glasses between 2 and 5 ounces in size. The richer the dessert shooter in flavor and texture, the smaller the glass need be. And, you can get creative with your containers - glasses such as large votive holders or small vases make an interesting presentation. An unconventional dessert shooter glass

I just love these Rednek glasses. I think this martini glass would look great layered with ingredients in vivid colors, such as strawberries, blueberries and vanilla cake. Top with some sweetened whipping cream and you're good to go for a berry good dessert shooter!

Brown cow dessert shooter

My absolute favorite dessert shooter glass

The Merritt Acrylic Tumbler (5 ounces)

I just bought two of these Merritt acrylic tumblers in Key West and paid almost double what they are here on Amazon. The make a beautiful presentation, especially when there is jello involved as it reflects off the prism in the bottom. These glasses also make a pretty nice presentation with a shot of Johnny Walker Blue (don't ask me how I know...).

The brownie layer of the Brown Cow Dessert Shooter is important!

No Brown Cow Dessert Shooter is complete without the fudgiest, tastiest chocolate brownie you can find as the bottom layer. Surprisingly, I have used pre-packaged brownie mix, like Barefoot Contessa Pantry Outrageous Brownie Mix which, btw, Mom adored. But, I tend to mix up my own and, if you're into this dessert shooter all the way, make your own favorite brownie recipe. It's delicious any way you do it.

I love taking a boxed mix of Barefoot Contessa's brownies and adding even more chocolate chips to the batter before baking. But, any of your favorite chocolate brownies will do. Alternatively, if you're not a fan of brownies, substitute any of your favorite chocolate cookies, crumbled, to the bottom of the glass. In the below picture, i've added in some oreo cookie crumbs before I put in the cubed brownie pieces - I'm an equal opportunity chocolate dessert shooter creator!

Note: I bought this dessert shooter glass at the local thrift store run by the Humane Society. I paid a whopping twenty-five cents for it!

Gourmet Brownie Mixes

I personally love Ghirardelli brownie mixes and find that the brownies are fudgier than any I've ever made from my own scratch mix.

Add in the "Cow" part - the ice cream!

And don't forget the chocolate sauce

dessert shooter sundaeNo Brown Cow Dessert Shooter is complete without the best quality vanilla ice cream. You can, of course, substitute in any kind of ice cream you like but my favorite is the Breyer's Vanilla Bean ice cream - it's just plain old delicious and has real flakes of vanilla sprinkled throughout.

And, why have the best brownie and vanilla ice cream if you don't splurge on the best chocolate fudge topping? Pick a good one - I prefer Hershey's Special Dark Syrup the best, but my fridge if filled with a few of the items below also.

Gourmet Chocolate Toppings

The below chocolate toppings are the best ever, imho. And, I should know as my fridge is filled with one of each. Select any of your favorites and you don't have to limit yourself to just chocolate, think butterscotch, caramel, or any of your favorite toppings.

Finish the Brown Cow Dessert Shooter off with the freshest whipped cream

and don't forget the cherry!

dessert shooter whipped creamDon't scrimp here either; Cool Whip just won't do. I make my own fresh whipped cream in a specialty whipped cream maker. It minimizes the mess and assures the fluffiest whipped cream ever.

If you're serving adults, this might be an appropriate time to add in the liquor of your choice to the whipped cream once it's whipped. I love using Kahlua (chocolate flavored) or Chambord (raspberry flavored) liquors as a great topping. And, here's a new one on me - did you know you can buy Cream Alcohol Infused Caramel Whipped Cream in the can? I've had it and, let me tell ya, they're fabulous toppings.

Finish your dessert shooter with just a drizzle of cherry juice and a juicy maraschino cherry on top. Dig in!

Whipped cream makers on Amazon

I love that these whipped cream makers are all in one piece and very easily cleaned. Your freshly whipped cream can also be stored right in the canister for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
