Miniature Cast Iron Stoves & Skillets
Miniature Cast Iron Stove, Salesman Sample Stoves, and Cast Iron Toy Skillets
Traveling salesmen often sold wares that were too large to transport from place to place, so they made use of smaller models called salesman samples. They were often the size of a toy and were made of cast iron. Some of the models also had a nickle plating. Similar model iron stoves were sold by the same manufacturers who made the salesmen's models. Today, they are valuable collectors items.
There are also many types of cast iron toy stoves, and of course reproduction or fake cast iron miniatures, like the Queen Cast Iron Toy Stove pictured.

What To Look For in Model Cast Iron Stoves
Miniature Cast Iron Stoves
- Look for a manufacturer's stamp. Salesmen's samples typically came with the manufacturer's name stamped to the bottom. Toys also came with a box detailing the model and year.
- Check the texture. Like many antiques and collectibles, there are replicas floating around. Reproduced pieces might have a rough finish and can also be lighter than genuine miniature stoves because they are made with aluminum or steel, while genuine pieces are typically smooth.
- Look for accessories. Many of the same salesmen that sold stoves also sold pots and pans and it was common for model stoves to also come with miniature cookware.
- Avoid items with missing parts. Some miniature stoves may be missing the panels in the front or a leg. Avoid these and make sure you are buying an item in good condition.
- Do some research. Current pricing guides often include miniature stoves and you can also browse flea markets and antique shows to see what miniature stoves go for. This can help you avoid being overcharged for an item you want.
- If you ask six experts, you may get half a dozen opinions. You would think something as simple as a salesman's sample wouldn't create much controversy. But some antiques experts may have difficulty telling the difference between a salesman's sample, a toy, and a fake. This is simply one case where you will have to rely on your own judgment and do your own homework.
- Be sure to shop around. You might find that two or three different antique shops have widely varying prices for very similar pieces. It is possible to sell a piece for $3000 or $4000, but what if the guy down the road is selling the same piece in equally good condition for $1000? While making sure to inspect the piece carefully to make sure it isn't missing parts and isn't a replica, you can save some money by shopping around.

Why Would Salesmen Carry These Samples?
Cast Iron Salesman Sample Stoves
Well, the first reason is that they often traveled a lot and couldn't carry a lot of cargo with them. If you've ever seen "The Music Man," the opening scene had a bunch of salesmen traveling on a train who were complaining about the star of the show, who was a fraud. All they had with them were their briefcases, and you probably remember the "Wells Fargo Wagon" scene when the real merchandise was delivered. Another reason was that these were made during an era when Americans were still making the transition from wood stoves to gas or electric. Many housewives were leery about having something that could explode in their houses and the models gave salesmen a way to demonstrate how their stoves worked.Salesman Sample Cast Iron Stove photo by Le Petit Poulailler.
