Miniature Pinschers, also called Min Pins, are arguably the most adorable dogs in the world! Though not actually related to Dobermans, the breed does look just like a miniature doberman pinscher-- too cute!

The Breed-- Isn't it just a miniature Doberman Pinscher?

Believe it or not, the Miniature Pinscher breed was introduced before the Doberman Pinscher! Min Pins originated in Germany and were first created by crossing the smooth-coated Dachshund with the Italian Greyhound (another very cute, miniature dog!).

Though mini pinschers are considered to be a toy breed, they are much more like terriers in temperament due to the fact that they were bred to hunt rats and other vermin.

Min Pin owners today might not believe that this breed was never intended to be a house pet or lapdog-- mini pinchers in days of yore were hard-working outdoor farm dogs!

Though my min pin, Henry, loves nothing more than to sit on my lap, curl up in bed and laze around, I can see how some of his funny behaviors come from his farm roots. For instance, most mini pinschers love to burrow under blankets, which may be traced to their need to burrow under hay to keep warm back in the farm days.

Miniature Pinscher Training

They're so cute, they get away with murder-- learn how to keep them in line!

When I first got my Min Pin, Henry, I had trouble with a few training issues. Potty training was a problem for awhile, as Miniature Pinchers are infamously hard to housebreak. Thankfully, I found a great resource that helped me tackle every training issue, from house training to jumping to barking.

If you have a Miniature Pinscher, you know how "strong-willed" they can be (maybe it's another habit from the working days on the farm!). It's really important to establish yourself as the Alpha, or leader of the pack, with your minpin.

These dogs are incredibly clever, and if you're firm enough and follow good training practices, you can use that to your advantage! They learn words very quickly (Henry knew what "food" meant almost immediately!) and can be very well-behaved dogs if you are consistent with them.

If you'd like a guide to training your Min Pin, I highly suggest this ebook. Good luck with your training!

Nice lens. Have never owned a Min Pin, but we see a few at our grooming shop and they are usually well behaved for a toy breed. 5 *'s

Just picked up little Bobby today. I'd committed to him without meeting him. Offered by friends of a friend. He has been attacked by mosquitoes. He seemed so shy I didn't take him from the box to examine him. On getting him home, I've found he has absolutely no evidence of any tail! Nothing! Poor little guy - I think this will effect him to some degree because he has nothing to 'wag' when he's happy. Anyway, he's a little gentle one it seems. He's snuggling here right now on my lap. My cats are horrified that I bring this canine into their lives. Hey cats, get used to it! So i'm very new to little dogs. Have always owned bigger dogs, eg German Shorthaired pointers and Weimeraner as well as a few bitzas - a bit of this and a bit of that. Anyone know about the tail issue. Thanks.
