Amazing Mining For Gems, Stones, Gold Party!
The mining party is super fun and rates 5 stars with all ages.
A friend of mine and I started a party/ entertainment / science education project a couple years ago and one of the VERY popular programs/ parties that we ran was this one.
There are many variations that can be done with this idea.....in fact the sky is the limit!
It can easily be adapted to boys, girls, or both, and can be adapted for a wide variety of occasions, too.
Some people like to do birthday parties, while others do special occasion parties and programs, school programs, and even holiday programs.
We had one school use the program for their end of the year fun and games program.
The point is for the kids to have fun, and believe me, they do!
In fact, even adults enjoy mining!
It's super fun!

Planning The Party
But, before budgeting you are going to need to design your party so that you know exactly what you are going to need.
1. Decide how many children you are going to invite (and plan for a few more, just in case), and whether the guests are girls, boys, or both.
2. Know the age ranges of your guests, so that you can choose games and prizes that they will be capable of enjoying.
3. Decide how much money you want to spend ideally (you may decide that you don't mind going over that preliminary budget later, but it's still better to have it laid out at the beginning)
4. Decide how long you want your party to last
5. Decide what type of food you want to serve (this might depend on the age group, for example, it's easier to serve finger food for younger children).

Depending on what your occasion is, and based on the other factors, you then need to plan out how much time is going to be allotted for each activity.
Let's say the party is going to be 2 hours.
So, you need to decide how many games you are going to have time for, leaving at least half an hour (or more, if the children are younger) for food.
If the children are younger, you are going to have to have games that go faster, and keep them interested.
If the children are older, you can have games that are more involved, and you can also do other projects, too.
Young Children Game Suggestions -
Pass the toy
You sit the children in a circle and have a soft toy that is passed around (with help from grownups, if needed) while the music is playing... when it goes off the child left holding the toy is out. If you have a lot of children, you can make this go faster by having many soft toys all in play at the same time. The soft toy is preferably something that fits in with the theme... like a clam, a stuffed gemstone, or something similar (otherwise any toy will do, even plastic gems (large ones to avoid choking) to pass around).
Duck Duck Goose Type
The children sit in a circle and one child goes around with a toy (or giant gemstone) and hides it behind one child's back and runs... if the other child catches him (or her) before they take the running child's place they win and the first child must continue, but if the first child manages to sit without getting caught, then the chasing child becomes "it".(This game is just fun.. a prize for all)...
Story Telling
Young children absolutely adore stories, and so having them sit around and listen to a very animated story, and you can even make one up (we have a couple gem related stories that have lots of princesses and precious rubies, etc in them)...
Older Child Suggestions:
If you are having a girls party, you might want to let them make jewelry with their gemstones.
Or make gemstone crafts (like treasure boxes, etc)
If you are having a mostly boys party, you could do the place up like a mine and have the boys mining, identifying stones, and making keepsakes with the stones (or you might want to use petrified wood or dinosaur bones for boys).
Any Age Suggestions -
Hunting for Gems
Children of all ages love a treasure hunt. Just make sure that the type of hunt is gauged for the ages of the children. For older children you could even make a treasure map with clues.
Gem Drop
Get a can, bottle, or any other container (depending on the ages) and have kids compete in dropping plastic gemstones into the containers. Those most in during the time allotted. wins.
Mining for Treasures
For this, you need a couple of plastic tubs, some sand or dirt, plastic tarp for the floor (if this is going to be done indoors), plenty of water, and panning pans (we found some great stainless steel ones, but you can also use metal or plastic sieves, which work nicely, as well.
You will need some gemstones. These can be real gems (we actually used real ones, mixed with inexpensive rock, minerals, etc.) or plastic ones (just as much fun).
And you can either time it (1 minute or so is usually more than enough), so that everyone gets a turn. (You may need to reseed your dirt or sand if you have a lot of participants).
The other way is to give each guest a blob of clay with the gems hidden inside, and they have to dip them in the water until they uncover the gems.
Guests of all ages enjoy both methods, and if you have a good budget, you might want to do both.

Cake Or Cupcakes?
When you have a party of any type sweets are definitely important!
You may want to choose to have cupcakes (which is what we usually choose, because they are so easy to make, decorate, and eat!
You may also want to choose to have a great cake.
In the gallery below, you will find some really cute examples of miner, gold miner, gem, jewelry, etc cakes!
They all look so amazing that it's almost a shame to eat them!
I found a great recipe on the Woman's Day site for this cute Jewelry Box Cake!
Princess Jewelry Box Cake
From Woman's Day | June 20, 2006
Recipe Ingredients
LID
8 whole graham crackers (2 squares each)
10 oz white baking chocolate
JEWELRY BOX CAKE
2 boxes (16 oz each) poundcake mix (preferably Betty Crocker)
2 cans (16 oz each) strawberry frosting
1 can (16 oz) vanilla frosting
COMPARTMENTS & DRAWER
4 whole graham crackers
9 creme-filled sugar wafer cookies
1 white gumball
You also need: 1 pastry bag with coupler, 1 small star tip and 1 writing tip
Jewelry: assorted edible rings, earrings and brooches (directions follow), candy necklaces or other purchased edible jewelry
Recipe Preparation
Lid:
On a large foil-lined baking sheet arrange 4 whole graham crackers, flat sides down and long sides touching.
Next to them, add 1 more row, narrow ends touching, to make a rectangle about 10 x 8 3/4 in.
Melt white chocolate as package directs.
Evenly spread over crackers to cover. (If some seeps between crackers, that's OK.)
Let chocolate dry overnight.
Jewelry Box Cake:
Heat oven to 325ºF.
Coat a 13 x 9 x 2-in. baking pan with nonstick spray.
Line bottom with wax paper; spray paper.
Prepare 1 box cake mix as package directs.
Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.
Bake 25 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool on a wire rack 10 minutes before inverting on rack to cool completely.
Repeat with other box of cake mix.
Wrap and refrigerate.
To assemble:
Carefully invert Lid so chocolate is underneath.
Spread top with 2/3 cup strawberry frosting.
Cut a 2-in. strip from one short end of each cake.
Cut a 1-in. piece crosswise off 1 strip.
Set aside uncut strip and 1-in. piece for drawer (you won't need rest of cut strip).
Put 1 cake layer, right side up, on a flat 14 x 12-in. or larger serving surface, leaving at least 2 1/2 in. from front edge of serving surface for the drawer.
Spread top of cake with 2/3 cup strawberry frosting; top with other cake, right side up.
Frost top with 2/3 cup vanilla frosting.
Compartments:
Using a sawing motion with a serrated knife, carefully cut remaining 4 crackers in half lengthwise.
Frost 1 side using 2 Tbsp vanilla frosting.
Put frosted sides, facing in, into frosting around top edge of cake.
Set wafer cookies, long edge down, into frosting to make compartments.
Reserve 1/4 cup vanilla frosting.
Place remaining vanilla frosting in pastry bag fitted with writing tip.
With shorter edge of frosted lid facing you, pipe name and butterflies on top 3/4 of lid (when attached to box, bottom of lid won't be seen).
Frost sides of cake with 1 1/3 cup strawberry frosting.
Carefully lift lid and attach to back of cake, gently pressing to adhere to frosting on cake.
Stack filled food cans against back of lid to hold it in place until frosting sets.
Drawer:
Press reserved cake strip A (click here for diagram ) and 1-in. piece B onto front of cake.
Frost top and sides with reserved 1/4 cup vanilla frosting.
Place remaining halved crackers, frosted sides in, around drawer.
Coat with strawberry frosting.
Press gumball knob in center.
Pipe butterflies on sides of cake.
Change piping tip to star tip.
Pipe stars around lid, top of box and drawer.
Let set at least 4 to 6 hours.
Remove cans.
Fill with edible jewelry.Rings & earrings:
Use frosting to glue assorted rock candy or gumballs to gummy or regular Lifesavers candies.
Glue assorted rock candy to Sunkist Fruit Gems with frosting.
Planning Tip: The lid must be made at least 1 day ahead.
The cake layers can be baked up to 3 days ahead.
