Minolta Maxxum AF Prime Lenses

A proud Sony Alpha photo enthusiast will soon realize that a very viable alternative to the interchangeable lenses for the Sony Alpha digital SLRs are the Minolta (Maxxum, Dynax, Konica-Minolta) AF-series lenses, a series of superior performance lenses, which can be adapted to the Sony Alpha series digital SLRS without change.

These series of Minolta interchangeable autofocus lenses was introduced with the launch of the Minolta Maxxum series 35mm flim SLR cameras almost two decades ago. And as we know it the technologies of these advanced system has now been transfered to the Sony Alpha Digital SLR seriess.

While the initial Minolta 7000's AF lens system comprised of 12 Minolta AF lenses with focal lengths ranging from 24mm to 300mm, we will only be looking at only the 50 to 135mm primes here, including the macro lenses.

In The Spotlight

The A-Mount and Digital Crop Factor

The A-mount system was initially on the Minolta AF camera system and was also used by many different cameras and accessories which was added to the range and was retained as the standard lens mount system for Sony Alpha digital SLRs models after the technology transfer from konica-Minolta to Sony.

Because of their ability to be used without any modification or without the use of lens adapters on the present crop of Sony Alpha Digital SLRs, these lenses are very much sought after and is currently referred as the fastest selling camera lenses on eBay, with a price to match.

With a crop-factor of 1.5x for the lower series Sony Alpha's (A200, A300, A350) the 50mm lens with gives you an image equivalent to a 75mm on a full frame film SLR, a focal length close enough to be considered as a 'portrait lens.' Coupled with a very wide aperture of 1.4 or 1.7 that gives you the 'low-light' capability that does not come with your kit (zoom lenses) you have got yourself a truly great lens to start of your digital photographic journey...

Minolta AF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Minolta AF camera system was a revolutionary collection of photographic equipment from Minolta. The system used a lens mount of the same name, also known as the A mount, with a flange focal distance 44.5 mm. The system was marketed as Maxxum in North America and Alpha (or %u03B1) in Japan and the rest of Asia.

Let's go down the list

When Minolta first introduced the the MAXXUM 7000 they also introduced 3 AF lenses for what is termed as the standard 50mm focal length. Two of them were 'normal' application lens while another was a specialize lens that was specifically for working at close working range, where it was referred as 'Macro' lens. The 50 mm standard lens actually gives you almost a true image because of its perspective yields, which is extremely close to what the 'unaided' eye sees.

Minolta also introduced two other options in prime lenses, one at 135mm and another was at a longer focal length of 300mm.

The advantage of its maximum and constant apertures of 135mm lenses are its flexibility in providing more depth of field control and high speed enough to make the lenses useful in low light situations especially when used in combination with the various ISO settings available on your cameras.

Minolta AF 50mm f/1.4

Generally, both the f1.4 and the f/1.7 at their widest will produce a bright and easy to focus image in the viewfinder and allow you to shoot in low light condition without using any artificial illumination such as flash. An additional characteristic of fast lenses is the shallow depth of field that can be obtained when the lens is used at maximum aperture. When the aperture is at its maximum aperture, the foreground and background become blurred, isolating and emphasizing the main subject.

  • Construction: 7 elements in 6 groups
  • Angle of view: 47°
  • Minimum focus: 0.45m
  • Minimum f-stop: f/22
  • Dimensions: 65.5 x 38.5mm

Minolta AF 28mm f/2.8

In film camera world, the AF 28mm focal length is considered today to be a standard wideangle especially for those who finds they always has to deal with PR photography. The main advantage of the 28mm lens is its ability to capture a fairly large subject area without creating undue concern over its perspective rendition. At 1.5 crop ratio with APS-C sensors, the focal length will be the equivalent of a 42mm.

  • Construction: 5 elements in 5 groups
  • Angle of view: 75 degree
  • Minimum focus: 0.3m
  • Minimum f-stop: f/22
  • Dimensions: 665.5 x 42.5mm
