The A-Mount and Digital Crop Factor
The A-mount system was initially on the Minolta AF camera system and was also used by many different cameras and accessories which was added to the range and was retained as the standard lens mount system for Sony Alpha digital SLRs models after the technology transfer from konica-Minolta to Sony.Because of their ability to be used without any modification or without the use of lens adapters on the present crop of Sony Alpha Digital SLRs, these lenses are very much sought after and is currently referred as the fastest selling camera lenses on eBay, with a price to match.
With a crop-factor of 1.5x for the lower series Sony Alpha's (A200, A300, A350) the 50mm lens with gives you an image equivalent to a 75mm on a full frame film SLR, a focal length close enough to be considered as a 'portrait lens.' Coupled with a very wide aperture of 1.4 or 1.7 that gives you the 'low-light' capability that does not come with your kit (zoom lenses) you have got yourself a truly great lens to start of your digital photographic journey...

Generally, both the f1.4 and the f/1.7 at their widest will produce a bright and easy to focus image in the viewfinder and allow you to shoot in low light condition without using any artificial illumination such as flash. An additional characteristic of fast lenses is the shallow depth of field that can be obtained when the lens is used at maximum aperture. When the aperture is at its maximum aperture, the foreground and background become blurred, isolating and emphasizing the main subject.- Construction: 7 elements in 6 groups
