Paying for college is a challenge for any student, but particularly students who come from backgrounds of financial hardship. Fortunately, there are many funding opportunities available to help talented and smart students get the education they deserve. Student scholarship programs are are one such source of funding that can help students of particular racial or economic backgrounds. While some scholarship opportunities are more generalized, others are only open to a student with certain characteristics. If you are a black student, you have many resources for college funding from a variety of notable organizations that care about your success.

Organizations that work to help promising black Americans find footing in higher education and in the workforce do so because black students in this country often face significant hardships. The United Negro College Fund is a frontrunner in providing academic scholarships to deserving black students. This organization has awarded thousands of scholarships, totaling at around 600 million dollars, since its inception. That's a lot of opportunities for students who could not otherwise afford the costs of tuition! UNCF is committed not only to helping black students pay for school, but to ensuring that they make the most of their education through career development programs.

Another notable organization is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which has a history of making strides for black civil rights. NAACP promotes opportunities for black students who are struggling to afford a college education. Several grant and scholarship opportunities are offered each year to qualified students who meet criteria for merit as well as need. NAACP shows preference for black students who are pursuing education in fields where fewer black Americans are employed.

Career Fields Also Offer College Aid

If you already know what area of study you are interested in pursuing while in college, use this to your advantage when seeking scholarships for college. There are certain fields in which blacks and other minorities are underrepresented. Many organizations exist to promote education for black students in some of these areas, such as science, technology, and medicine. There are groups that provide scholarships for the black journalists, accountants, and engineers of the future. BISA provides college money for inner city black women experiencing difficulty paying for college tuition. If you live in a southeastern state such as Georgia or Mississippi, you may qualify to apply for the Ethel Lee Hoover Ellis Scholarships, which awards college money to black women in this region of the country.
