My Little 4-Legged Angel
My Little Four-Legged Angel
Lots of love in a little package
"God sent us an Angel!"We are grandparents with 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. We are a couple that enjoys our privacy and solitude. Angel is our only pet and the first dog we have had since our children were small. She is also the only "inside dog" we have ever owned. She is approximately 10-11 years old, female, has never had puppies and she has never been "fixed". She weighs in between 11 and 12 pounds and is black and rust colored.
Our little Min Pin is named Angel and she more than lives up to her name. When I became disabled (1999) I decided that a dog would be good company for me around the house, especially during the day when my wife was at work. So we began to research small breeds to determine which ones would most likely suit my laid back personality. A Min Pin was not on my list.
My wife called from work one day and asked if I'd like to have a Min Pin. A co-worker had just taken in a 5 year old Min Pin that came from a broken home where the little dog had been neglected and banished to the outdoors. At first I was a little hesitate. I had heard that Min Pins were energetic, hyper, yappers and generally full of themselves. I wasn't sure that she would be a good fit to our situation. After hearing the story of the neglect and then hearing how sweet and gentle the little dog was purported to be, we decided to go meet Angel. We met the couple in the Home Depot parking lot. The guy was holding the dog on his lap and then in his arms as he got out of the car and approached us. When I reached my hand out to pet her she literally lept from his arms into my arms and into my heart and has been there ever since. We took her home, gave her a bath and took her to the vet the next day. After lots of tests and a good look over, he said he thought that she was about 5 years old. (We did not receive any papers or records from the previous owners so we did not know how old she was or have any of her medical history.) And then came the bad news; he said she has heart worms and is so weakened that giving her the heart worm medicine full strength could kill her.

My Little Four-Legged Angel - Part II
The Rest Of The Story
- ...continued from Part I: To make a long story short, she received the medication in small doses and has since recovered, almost fully. She did however loose most of her teeth and is unable to eat dry dog food. That is no problem as we make sure she gets everything she needs including soft food. Today she seems to be as happy with us as we are with her. She goes everywhere I go. She loves riding in the car. When we go on trips she goes with us. (I was surprised to find out how many motel chains now allow pets to stay in their facilities, usually at a small extra charge, but the extra charge is much cheaper than boarding and lots more fun for us and Angel.) I boarded her once not long after we got her while my wife was in the hospital with a brain tumor. When I picked her up at the kennel it was evident that she had missed us terribly and she was so eager to get out of there and go home. I decided then that this would not happen again and it hasn't. After bringing my wife home from the hospital, Angel somehow knew my wife's condition and showered her with love and attention during her illness and especially after each radiation treatment. (Last weekend we attended our fifth Relay For Life Rally to celebrate 5 years of being cancer free.)
God knew that Angel would be a perfect fit in our lives and home. Her demeanor is like mine, calm and laid back. She is content just to be with me. She is a perfect little lady. When I ride my wheel chair through the neighborhood she sits on my lap like the perfect little lady that she is. Sometimes when we are out other dogs see Angel and start barking. Angel just looks at them like they are crazy and silently ignores them. She never barks back at them and never yaps like other small dogs I have seen. I take her outside several times each day for exercise and fortunately we have enough acreage where she can run freely and enjoy herself. When I call her she obeys instantly. She is incredibly and almost unbelievably well behaved and obedient.
My wife (who had never really been a pet person) has become a great "mommy" to Angel. She treats her just like one of the family (which she is) and loves doing things for Angel. Last year when my wife made a new custom quilt for our bed, she also made one for Angel. She has become such a wonderful and special part of our lives that we include her in every aspect. When bath time comes she just jumps in the shower with me. I am continually amazed at her intelligence and her ability to project her sweet spirit and love toward us. Neither of us can imagine or understand how anyone could harm or neglect such a beautiful and loving animal. Angel is indeed an "angel" and God's answer to our prayers. Now, we can't imagine life without her!
Please say hello before you leave.
Tell Angel you were here.

God bless you and your wife for giving Angel a second chance! I could not help shed a tear while reading Angel's heartwarming story. I just lost my 18-month-old min pin Dora three days ago, to distemper. My partner and I miss her terribly but we're channeling our grief positively by adopting two more min pins.
