Mint Chocolate is one of those flavors that people either seem to love or hate. I happen to love it; mint chocolate chip ice cream is my most favorite dessert. Because I'm such a die-hard fan (and I know there are plenty of us out there), I've put together this page of mint chocolate recipes, including, of course, ice cream, cake, and other scrumptious treats for those with a discerning palette. A Bit About Mint Chip
Mint chocolate chip ice cream has been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. I am seriously addicted to it, which is why I usually don't keep any in the house. To me, there is no better treat at the end of a long day than a heaping helping of mint chip... which, of course, leads to other issues, but we'll get to those in a minute.
Much to my delight, mint chocolate chip has become a very popular ice cream flavor. Turkey Hill, alone, produces five different varieties of it. This flavor goes by many different names, depending on the manufacturer or the recipe, though most are easily recognizable. You'll often hear it referred to as mint chip, chocolate mint chip, choco mint, and even peppermint bon bon. Until recently, I'd never even heard of that last one, but, apparently, it's very popular in the U.S. Midwest. I've also heard that those faithful to it turn their nose up at mint chocolate chip, so now my curiosity is really peaked.
What's the best type of chocolate mint ice cream?
Store-Bought vs Homemade
I love store-bought mint chip. Give me a bowl of Turkey Hill or Breyers and I'm all set. I really have no interest in making my own, but how about you? Do you buy your ice cream or do you enjoy whipping up your own?

Many commercial brands, including Dreyer's, Baskin Robbins, and some Turkey Hill varieties just to name a few, use food coloring to create the green color of their mint chocolate chip ice cream. Others, such as Breyers, boast all-natural or organic ingredients, resulting in a "white" mint color.
I, for one, used to be a real stickler when it came to the color of my mint chocolate chip ice cream. I don't know why, but it had to be green. Thankfully, that's not the case anymore ... green or white, it's all good.

Ever wonder about the, um, nutritional value of mint chocolate chip ice cream? Personally, I try not to think about it. After all, we're talking about my comfort food here. If I'm not careful, I could devour half a tub in one sitting. Unfortunately, we all know that's not a very wise strategy, especially if you're counting calories. And since ice cream isn't the healthiest of desserts, what's a mint chip addict to do?
Well, some companies try to lessen the caloric load by offering slow-churned, all-natural or organic varieties. Breyers is one such brand that makes delicious all-natural mint chocolate chip ice cream. Even so, there are still ways to cut the calories and sugar. Livestrong.com is website that offers nutritional advice, including healthy suggestions for complimentary foods and alternative flavors. But, honestly, when you love the taste of mint chocolate chip, are you really interested in trying a different flavor just to save a few calories? Not me!
Another option, of course, is to compare the different brands and stick with the healthier ones.
