Miscarriages Can Be Misdiagnosed!

Hi. My name is Kay and I am the mother of a beautiful not-so-blighted ovum and have been through two, oh yes two, misdiagnosed miscarriages.

As a result, I have a passion for getting the word out that, yes, miscarriages are sometimes misdiagnosed.

Miscarriages can be misdiagnosed!

I believe every woman deserves to have no doubt before having her pregnancy ended.

A Word about "False Hope"

Some folks might say that by sharing these stories, we are giving false hope to other women who are diagnosed with a miscarriage. Many women are destined to miscarry and none of these stories will change the pregnancy's ultimate destiny. However, when somebody is diagnosed with a serious condition or terminal illness, they are told to seek a second opinion. Often times the second opinion will simply verify what the patient has already been told. On the flip side however, many people find they've been misdiagnosed. Miscarriage is no different and, yes, miscarriages are misdiagnosed, more often than once thought.

My hope by sharing these stories is that you ask the important questions of your doctor and don't feel pressured into ending your pregnancy too soon especially if you have no serious complications (i.e. infection, ectopic or molar pregnancy, etc...). If you feel you are being rushed into ending your pregnancy, get a second opinion. We've even had women get third and fourth opinions before finding their babies! You deserve to have no doubt you are miscarrying before ending your pregnancy.

The Background Behind these Stories

These stories have been collected on the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site. By compiling these stories, our hope is that the medical community will stand up, take notice and reevaluate how they evaluate a pregnancy.

Please, keep in mind, these are only a portion of the many stories we have collected. Every month, we collect more and more stories which may be found at the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site.

IMPORTANT: Current Warnings on Misdiagnosed Miscarriages

After eight years of trying to get misdiagnosed miscarriages in the news, we're finally seeing results. Here is an article by Time Magazine.

Ultrasound Guidelines May Wrongly Diagnose Miscarriage

A snippet from that article:

"As if the worry over potential miscarriage weren't stressful enough for newly pregnant women, research released Friday shows that current guidelines for using ultrasound to determine that a pregnancy has ended may not always be accurate.

The four new studies looked at U.K. ultrasound specifications, but when the findings are extrapolated to U.S. guidelines, the researchers suggest 1 in 23 women diagnosed with miscarriage could still have a viable pregnancy."

On the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage site, we believe that that figure might be much higher. For women diagnosed with a blighted ovum, something like one in five may be much more accurate.

This poll is more for my own benefit. I hear from women just about every week who are misdiagnosed. Often they'll ask how they should handle the misdiagnosis. I'd like to know what you think.

i am very scared. i went to my ob/gyn on may 12 2012 and he seen a heartbeat he said i was about five weeks and five days. I have a negative rh factor and have to have get rhogam when i start spotting at about six weeks i know this because i have three wonderful little boys that i have had to have rhogam with . i also had a miscarriage on january 1st of 2012. i had a rhogam shot with that pregnancy as well but something else was wrong. i started spotting the other day which was on the 27th day of may. i went to the emergency room because my ob/gyn is out of town until tomorrow the 30 of may. i was told that the tech could not find a heartbeat on the vaginal ultrasound and that the fetus was the size of 6 weeks and 1 day and the sac was the size of 6 weeks three days and they never did tell me my hcg levels. the doctor in the er just told me to follow up with my doctor. they did however give me my rhogam shot i have not experienced any more spotting since the rhogam shot i estimate that i should be around seven weeks and 3 days. i am still very sick to my stomach and still having some other pregnancy symptoms i am very scared that i will have a miscarriage again. has any one ever had this happen to them and what is the outcome?

Generally, if a doctor has seen the heartbeat during the first trimester and then not seen it, he will wait a week (if there are no complications) to verify. Many women do go on to miscarry but I've talked to more than a few now who have found those heartbeats again! (((hugs)))

Good lens. i did not know this even exisited. Before even getting married I was made aware that I might not have been able to have children after having an emergency appendectomy at 16 years old (It had burst and absessed). After getting married, about a year or so in, I had a misscarriage at about 10-12 weeks I don't remember exactly, it was about 19 years ago.
We now have three lovely children with us.
