Miserly Moms by Jonni McCoy --Book Review

Miserly Moms Living on One Income in a Two Income Economy by Jonni McCoy

ISBN 1-888306-14-9

Miserly Moms (in my opinion) is one of the outstanding books about living a simple, frugal life. A book that has been around for many years. See my full review below.

My Review

This is a book that's been out for years, but I've never had a chance to read it. I've always
wanted to read it, so I was thrilled when I seen it on the shelf at the last book sale at my
public library.

I highly recommend reading this book! The book is full of great ideas on how to save money in
every area of your life. She has the book set up into 11 miserly guidelines and each is covered in it's own chapter.

After the chapters of guidelines you find other chapters such as: great recipes, warehouse clubs, stretching the season, dinner on meeting night, birthdays and other holiday occasions, baby, cost of working, getting your kids to save, medical expenses, utilities and more!

Also included are appendixes: Menu Plans, Substitutions, Equivalency tables, and Metric Conversions, and Resources.

This book is one that is definitely staying on my shelf for future reference. I intend on trying a lot of her money saving recipes. The recipes aren't just for food, also includes recipes to use with your children such as play doh, bubbles etc.

Listed below are the Eleven Misery Guidelines that she has chapters on:
1. Don't confuse frugality with depriving yourself.
2. Give up things that provide the least value.
3. Keep track (written down) of food prices.
4. Don't buy everything at the same store.
5. Buy in bulk wherever possible.
6. Make (and grow) your own wherever possible.
7. Eliminate convenience foods.
8. Cut back on meats and poultry.
9. Waste nothing.
10. Institute a soup and bread night once per week.
11. Cook several meals at once and freeze them.

I think I always had to be a miserly mom when my kids were young. :)

I've pretty much always been a thrifty person, even when my finances were better than they are at present. Thanks for a good review, Marsha!

I prefer the word 'rationalist' to 'miserly' :) I think we need to be one, not only in hard and tough financial situations, but always, and teach our children to be as economically efficient as possible.

My husband calls me the Queen of Cheap. One book that I really like is the Tightwad Gazette. I need to check it out of the library again and write a review on it... although it is a really good reference; if I ever get the money I should buy it.

When we have a family to raise in this day and age, being miserly can really help.
