Mishka, The Siberian Husky

Mishka needs no introductions. . . well, maybe she does. Mishka, the Siberian Husky was my best friend and soul mate. No joke. I have yet to meet a person who looked at me, acted with me, nor made me feel completed. She understood me. Sadly, Mishka succumbed to a fast spreading lymphoma last summer and she is no longer with us.

This lens is dedicated to the beauty of the personalities that Siberian Huskies embody. They are not your average dog. They are smart. They love...they guilt trip you. Here you will find resources for learning about huskies, training your husky, and anything else related to Huskies too. Moreover,I am going to TRY and set up links to cancer treatments for Huskies.

Quick Update: I have decided to include videos of Mishka the talking Husky because is so amazing!

Siberian Huskies

Myths, Legends, Heroes

Siberian Huskies, for those who do not know, are medium sized dogs that resemble their cousin, the wolf. As they are strong runners with miles of endurance, they are the best working dog in the class. Originally from eastern Siberia, the breed belongs to the Spitz genome.

Huskies have personality. For the most part they are energetic, active, and can handle anything you put in front of them. Moreover, they are obstinate, free-thinkers that will do what you say only as you walk away. Very very independent creatures. Resilience is in their blood.

Husky Harnesses

Siberian Huskies love to run. In fact, Mishka and I ran two miles every day when she was here. Funny thing is that Huskies could go and go and go. I learned early on with Mishka that Siberian Huskies must be on a leash...or they will run far far away and not return for days. She always came back , but I learned that she would have to run with me, on a harness.

Considering a Husky?

Read On Before you Decide

So just about every child loves a "snow dog"....but that doesn't mean that everybody should own one! Huskies are the most lovable and reliable dogs out there, but they are also very very quirky. Here are some of the realities of owning a Siberian Husky:

1. They Can and will Escape
No matter how loyal your husky is to you, they are free spirited creatures. There is no fence to tall, or too deep that husky will not attempt to escape from. May I suggest that if you do not have a lot of land for your husky to run on...don't get one. And if you do have a lot of land, make sure that fence is at least six feet high and two feet deep! Mishka tried to dig out, so we concreted the new fence in...

Moreover, we ran five miles every day and then still wasn't enough exercise for her.

2. Fur Everywhere
Huskies shed year round, so if you like a spot free house and clean couches, buy a short haired dog because Siberian Huskies shed everywhere. They shed so much that you could make another dog out of the hair that comes out each day. This is because they have two very thick layers of hair.

3. They Are Obedient, but they Independent Too
Siberian Huskies are so smart that they will decide when to listen to your commands. There is no doubt that they know how to follow commands...because some times they will gladly listen, but other times they will wait until you've walked away, defeated to sit or lie down. They are in control of their own lives. An obedience class serves them well, to keep them from getting bored.

Most of all, be prepare to be loved beyond belief!

Why Does My Siberian Husky Puppy Bite?

Husky pups are wolves in essence. They love rough play.

Huskies again are a nordic arctic breed dog. Meant to live outside. Outside is their terrain. They chew trees, branches, rocks and any thing else. Like babies teething and growing, all things go in their mouth.

We have as humans taken an outside animal and domesticated it and try to kill all natural instincts which were meant for survival in the outside world. We bring it inside to our house where it is an environment that they do not know. Thus furniture is wood to them, they drag your stuff off to a hiding spot (DEN).

SOLUTION: Let them live and play outside most of the day. They have a lot of energy. DO NOT allow them to bit you! Be firm and discipline them. Just saying no is not always good. You MUST establish boundaries. What is acceptable and what is not.

"If you tell my Sheltie to jump off of a cliff, he will obediently do so. If you tell my Siberian to jump off of a cliff, he will say "After you, Mom." Now you tell me, which dog is smarter?"

The day that I found my beautiful red-headed, green-eyed husky with the sweetest demeanor and funniest personality, I knew that she was Mishka. And the rambunctiousness little boy who couldn't stay still...well, that was Cosmo.

Yelp

Here are some of the local pet services, boarding houses, and anything else that you might need while being in love with your husky.

Three years ago, I had to board Mishka while I went to the desert because I knew that she couldn't handle the heat. She loved it, according to the wonderful ladies who helped out with her. Apparently, she is VERY social with other dogs!

Tips:
Always check out the boarding house before you schedule the stay. Make sure you can see where the bog dogs sleep to insure that she/he is not being cramped into a small kennel.

Our family has been rescuing Siberian Huskies for several years and adopting some of them as our beloved furry friends. At present, we have a remaining 17 year old white blue eyed Siberian Husky female out of 3 we had (2 passed away in 2010, one was named Mishka too, we called her Mishka The Clown because she was really funny and playful! She was grey and white). Our surviving Husky Tasha rules the home and is so loving! Some geriatric care required at her age but she is so resilient and determined to walk an average of 2 to 3 hours per day at different times, must be what is keeping her going and going! Beautiful breed, cannot imagine owning any other breed. Great influence for long regular walks, good for everyone. Enjoyed your lens very much, thank you for your insights! Sorry for your loss of Mishka, losing a pet is like losing a child, completely understand.

Sorry for your loss. My husband and I are Sibe lovers as well. We currently own two huskies who are our pride and joy and members of our family. I know what it's like to put down a beloved husky. We've been through it too and it is awful. awful.
