I am partially Japanese and my grand mother, who is 100% makes an amazing bowl of miso soup. Probably one of my favorite dishes.
  • kelli320 Sep 27, 2011 @ 11:01 pm | delete
When I'm hungry from boredom, I try and police myself from strapping on the feedbag in an M&M bag with a big mug of miso. I usually just have some Kikkoman instant on hand. I never realized there would be so many options. I'll have to check a few out.

  • TravelingRae Jun 14, 2011 @ 10:38 pm | delete
Great lens about a great soup! I love it for breakfast. When I worked at a place with a food court I'd often grab a mug in the morning and I never once had to pay because it pleased the Japanese owner so much! I've never had a bad miso soup in a restaurant or in an instant sachet, but I haven't mastered making my own. You solved the mystery: I boiled it!
  • speaktolearn Jun 5, 2011 @ 9:57 am | delete
I really love Miso soup! I have it all the time.

Great lens! I find that you need to have it with the little Japanese soup bowls with the lids and deep spoons, it's just not the same out of a typical American cereal bowl =)
  • PolyPak Apr 29, 2010 @ 6:22 pm | delete
Miso is the perfect compliment to sushi. Thanks for the great tips you've provided on your lens!

Long time ago, I remember having had fish soup with miso and it was lovely and flavourful. Having read your lens, I feel inspired to do my own experimenting. My own version would be miso soup with fish fillet broken into chunks. We'll see how it goes.
  • kohuether Mar 16, 2010 @ 11:23 am | delete
I love Miso anyway but your lens REALLY made it look tasty. I want some! Maybe I'll have some for dinner tonight.

    Lots of great tips here!
  • relache Oct 23, 2009 @ 6:39 pm | in reply to Ashman | delete
Re-heated miso doesn't seem to have as full a flavor as when you make it fresh. Part of why I came up with that recipe is so that I could make it every morning and not have to save it. Anything you put in the soup gets mushy too over time.
  • Ashman Oct 20, 2009 @ 8:10 pm | delete
I just made "Rachel's Simple Breakfast Miso " and it was delicious!

How would the made-up soup keep in the fridge?

I'd love to be able to cook up a batch for the week, and store it in the fridge, and then reheat a small amount of it each morning.

    Is that possible?
  • patelm Jul 31, 2009 @ 5:59 pm | delete
I'd heard about Miso but didn't know about all the different kinds of miso soups. Will surely try out some of these recipes. Thanks for all the information.

  • Umeshu Jul 25, 2009 @ 11:42 pm | delete
Thanks for the well written introduction to Miso soup. My first experience with Miso soup was based on instant-miso-soup. I liked it but once you experienced the intense flavor of a real hand-made soup it is hard to go return to instant soup.

My favorite occasion for Miso soup is in the morning in a ryokan. Having a red and heavy Miso soup in the morning gives pleasure and energy for the whole day. In the evening I prefer a white one after a few nice sushi.
  • Swisstoons Jun 3, 2009 @ 11:18 pm | delete
You've sold me. Going to pick some up at the healthfood store. I'm sure I've seen it there. Rolling this to my own food-related lens.
  • relache May 26, 2009 @ 1:26 pm | in reply to CherylK | delete
Gently in peanut oil is the short version. It takes a few times to figure out how large or small you prefer your cubes and you have to take care not to fry them too long or they get really tough. They do keep for a bit but taste oh, so much better when cooked fresh and eaten right away.
  • CherylK May 25, 2009 @ 3:22 pm | delete
What an interesting lens this is! I did not know any of this about miso and you've explained it perfectly. Plus, you've made me want to try some of these recipes. I'd be interested to know how you fry your tofu cubes.

I'm Japanese (born in Ark) lol and never really liked miso soup but the other day I ate at a sushi bar and it was served to me so I felt I had to eat it and it was wonderful. Make me wonder why I never like it before. Great lens thanks for the info.

I was introduced to miso soup by a vegan roommate, years ago. He used to make it with brown miso, tofu, mushrooms, noodles, assorted veggies and spices. It was a very hearty soup and SO delicious. I haven`t had it since then, though, because I live in Guatemala now.
  • TopStyleTravel Mar 11, 2009 @ 1:29 pm | delete
Great lens on miso soup. My favorite is dark brown miso, with tonkatsu ramen and black pork Congrats on the Top 100!
  • California_Dreamin Feb 12, 2009 @ 12:55 am | delete
Great lens. Miso soup is my favorite Japanese food, and I eat a lot of Japanese food because I live in Japan. I usually have the traditional styles like miso with tofu and leeks, miso with clams, or tonjiru. But this lens makes me realize that the only limit to what can be done with miso soup is one own's imagination.
  • AdrienneJenkins Feb 8, 2009 @ 7:01 am | delete

I frequently have miso soup in the morning, my kids and I both love it. We make it from a packet, but it would probably be better made myself.

There's also a song called "Miso Soup" by the jpop duo TegoMass. You should check out. It's very catchy and they made both a Japanese and an English version of the single.

Very good. I grew up having miso paste in the fridge at all times, so I am very familiar with it.
