Did you know that there is a special pageant and celebration each year on Columbus Day?

Well, maybe you didn't know that all of the Columbus-named cities in the United States are invited each year to participate in the Columbus Day festivities.  The various Columbus cities who participate will send their "Miss Columbus" to the host city of Columbus, Ohio, where a "Miss Columbus USA" will be chosen.

Speaking from first-hand experience, I can say that my reign as a Miss Columbus, Ohio was quite memorable.  Competition to pick the Ohio representative began months before Columbus Day.  A few dozen girls initially competed in personal interviews which narrowed down the list to ten finalists.  The ten of us got to pick a wardrobe, from stores in a local mall, to wear that included two outfits--a casual outfit and a gown.  I can honestly say that the night I won the competition the girl next to me had to elbow me, "Hey, that's YOU!"  You see, I never expected to win!

More about Columbus Day

It celebrates the arrival of Christopher Columbus ...

Many countries in the New World plus elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in the Americas, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela. These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century, and officially in various countries since the early 20th century.

Suzette Charles : Former Miss Columbus Day 1983

I'll bet you didn't know that Suzette Charles from Mays Landing was actually a Miss Columbus Day in 1983?

Remember her? She was the 1st Runner-Up in the Miss America 1984 competition and assumed the title when Vanessa L. Williams relinquished it!

Melina Kanakaredes: Former Miss Columbus Day

By Alan Carter, The Soap Box, April 29, 1994

Even when she's being kidnapped, Guiding Light's Eleni is so sweet that Melina Kanakaredes, who plays her, says, ''I worry the audience is going to get completely sick of her.'' No chance. With a refreshing winsomeness, the Ohio- born Kanakaredes, a former Miss Columbus, is a Face to Watch in my book.

In three years, she has parlayed her role as a mousy caterer into a deserved Emmy nomination. ''I don't even read other people's scenes,'' she says. ''I figure Eleni is supposed to be naive and in the dark.'' This fall she'll appear in the Gregory Hines- directed feature White Man's Burden. And, yes, that was her singing in the background during last week's GL couples-in-love montage. ''I believe you can never learn enough, grow enough, or do enough,'' says Kanakaredes. And we can't get enough of her.

It all comes together now, from a beautiful mother, to a snot nosed teenaged beauty who deserved the title, to a beautiful giant Squid today. The state of Ohio can bask in the glory of super nice women such as you two. Hugs.......
