How To Prevent Your Child From Missing

Don't be the next statistic!

This is something you want to prevent at all costs. And this is a free web page that offers you some valuable tips and insight on how to prevent your child from missing...

Missing Child Statistics

A glimpse of how many children are missing out there...

In the US alone, 2,185 children being reported missing each day...

That's 91 children missing every hour!

As I create this web page (or lens) that took me two hours, nearly 200 children went missing!

That's how grave the situation is right now.

Looking Back In Time...

Looking back to my childhood eons ago, I remembered how terrible that feeling was when my siblings went missing.

It was so long ago...

That was back in the early 1960's in post-war Singapore where we lived predominantly in shop houses and gangsterism abounds.

We lived in the upper floor while the shop at the lower floor is a mechanic shop. And our parents forbid us to go downstairs to play with the other kids for fear that we will end up with the wrong company.

And my grandfather came home one day telling us that my younger brother is missing while following him through a crowded town some 10 km away!

We were all shocked...

... we waited for hours till the evening!

Till suddenly, my younger brother came home, all by himself. As a little boy, he walked home all the way, through dozens of streets, like a homing pigeon who can tell its way with its unique sense of direction.

We had no idea how he made it. But I thank GOD he did!

As he settled in, he finally burst into a bout of hysteria...

MISSING AGAIN! This time, it was my...

It was a HORRIBLE feeling!

Even though I was still a child myself around 10 years old when my younger brother - who's 3 years younger - went missing, it was truly a HORRIBLE feeling!

What would have happened to him if some pedophile or others with bad intention had taken him away? (There were lots of gangsters and secret society members in Singapore in those colonial days.)

His whole life would truly be ruined.

And then, it happened again...this time to my younger sister.

She went missing!

Like before, we waited.

And waited.

But she never came home by herself.

And one of our older folks in my family went searching for her. And...

Thank GOD we found her just at the end of the street where we lived. Again, the area was filled with many gangsters ... or what if she wandered off and never to be found again?

It's again an extremely scary event for our whole family.

How does a child get missing?

Three kinds of child abduction

Essentially, children are abducted by three groups of people, for various reasons:

- By their own parents. In this case, it's usually by the other parent who has separated or divorced from the parent who is staying with the child. The motive has usually to do with separation/divorce proceedings. In this case, the missing child is truly a victim of circumstances.

- By strangers, usually women who cannot have their own child, who raise the child as their own.

- By strangers, who kidnap the child for a ransom

What can you do if you're a PARENT...

'Prevention is better than cure!'

I remember that my pastor insisted that we make a photocopy of our passport and identity documents when we traveled together some years ago...

I never knew how important that is till I spoke to my friend, a fellow Singaporean, who was robbed during his recent trip to Europe! He lost not just his monies but all his passport and travel documents!!

Can you imagine the inconvenience and the stress that he went through as he was in a totally foreign land?

If only he had that advice and followed it to the letter...

You could take the same precautions for your children. Just in case. It's like buying insurance. That's something we wouldn't want to win. We rather that insurance companies be rich!

So, in the following section are a list of things you can do to prevent the HORRIBLE event of dealing with a missing child...

TOP 10 Things You Can Do To Prevent A Missing Child

  1. Make a copy of all your child's identification papers and photos in one convenient folder or location. This is especially handy if you bring it along during your travel with your children. The photos should be updated at least once every six months or a year due to the nature of child development.
  2. Likewise, have your children's fingerprints or even DNA samples at hand like an old comb or toothbrush he/she has used before.
  3. As soon as your child is ready, teach him/her their full name, address and phone number as well as your own full name. They can give this information to a kind soul or authorities in case they are lost, increasing their chances of being brought back to you.
  4. When hiring a babysitter, make sure make sure they are trustworthy, mature, able, and experienced. They should be people who really care for children. Get good references before you hire. Any mistake is TOO EXPENSIVE!
  5. Communicate with your children often. Establish a safe and trusted environment where your children feel free to speak to you so you might pick up any early warning signs. And more importantly, you want your child to listen to your advice and caution as they grow up.
  6. Teach your children to say NO to any unwelcome, uncomfortable, or confusing action or even offers and gifts by others, especially strangers.
  7. The cyberspace, though an efficient medium of communication for both personal and business needs, is the perfect place for would-be kidnappers to hide their true identity or even intentions. When your children are young, it is important to educate them as they interact with others on the Internet that there are indeed bad people out there - a harsh reality of life.
  8. At public places, be sure to watch over your child all the time. It is easy to be distracted by the nice looking dresses, shoes, jewelry, things, food and lot of good stuff and not noticing when your child starts wandering off or when a planned abduction is about to take place.
  9. Never leave your child alone even for a moment. There are horror stories of children left in the car for just a minute or so and the next thing the parents realize is that their child is gone...for good!
  10. Increase your awareness and help to spread the word about the REAL dangers of missing children and the HORRIBLE consequences of both the child and the devastation it brings to the family. I found an extremely good resource you can access from:
