I'm sorry for your loss. my sister has been missing for 30 years and her birthday is on saturday October 1st. I'm not sure I ever went through the greif I needed but I'm also not sure I believe she's not out there somewhere living life. I want to make a page for her but I'm not sure where to start. I wish you and your family all the peace and comfort you need.

Congratulations on the LotD - as a mother of many, and granny to more - this especially hit home, with me. The agony that parents of a missing child experience, is indescribable. Thankfully, your sister's story had a happy ending...so many of them, don't. Thank you for sharing this one with all of us!

It's hard to understand why teens feel running away is going to be the problem. Many households are not that sensitive to kids these days. There are so many more challenges and issues they face today that we just never had. Also media portrays more and more sex, violence and mischief as being the coolest thing out there. No wonder our children don't grow up with any sense of being. The future of our children can not just solely fall on the hands of the parents, we can not blame them for all the wrongs with kids, when every other influence out there is negative. Even Miley Cirus was quoted as saying "I am not the parent" when faced with the question of being a role model, but yet her main source of income is from underage children, if you don't want to be a role model, then don't target and take money from under 18 kids!

I can relate to this lens...i really hope that no sister, daughter, or girl ever feels that she has to leave home because of any kind of stress. This is a really common things among teenagers... good lens.

This is an incredible Lens of the Day and most deserving. It seems to me, as the mother of three girls and a boy, that the teen years can be so much harder for the girls.I am so glad your sister came home.

What an amazing story. I'm so glad that it had a good ending. I can't begin to imagine what it is like for the family of a missing loved one. Thanks for sharing this with us and for your advice on what to do.

Moving, and making us all want to help the parents who face their child missing at this moment. It is the biggest fear of many parents I guess... awful. Thank you so much for writing this great lens!
  • adoringmom May 13, 2010 @ 4:08 am | delete
This brought tears to my eyes, and I feel that this has to be said - while the family is fortunate to have her back, it is a lucky girl indeed that has people in her life that love her enough to look so hard. Sometimes they don't.
  • lasertek May 13, 2010 @ 2:50 am | delete
Thanks so much for sharing your story and informing readers on what must be done in case someone or somebody becomes missing. 5*

Your story is so personal and incredibly written, it grabs you from the beginning and holds you to the very end, I am so glad she was found okay. What you are sharing may well help other families that are unsure where to turn to find their missing child. The National Center For Missing & Exploited Children has an abundance of resources for families.
How can we all help? They have rss feeds, amber alert banners and numerous tools that people can post on their websites to help find children when they go missing. Families of missing people can find support from other families there as well. People who have been through it before and can help point them in the right direction.
I hope your sister has found happiness in her life. Congrats on LOTD, extremely well deserved in my opinion!
    Linda

You're so lucky that she had the time to think about what she had to do. So many kids that age don't have the time. We lost our son at 14 because he couldn't handle his ADD anymore, and he felt he had no where to go. That was in 1992, and our family will never be the same....always that black cloud around. Cherish her presence, even when things are not so good.

    Well deserving LOTD Kylyssa.

Congratulations on LOTD. Not only a fascinating story, (and terrifying to the mother of a 14yr old girl) but so well written. I love the way you have included tips to help those in a similar situation. Well done.

What a terrifying thing! I think most parents of teens fear that one will run away--often just under the influence of a peer. Congratulations on lens of the day and on creating this helpful lens for others.

Such a very thought-provoking lense. Thank you for telling your story.

Having a 15 daughter - if she ever went missing I would: (1) get down on my knees and pray (2) check her Facebook page.

Thank God you found her and that she was willing to come back home. I can only imagine what you and your family must have gone through. Kids can be so impetuous. They don't realize (or don't care about) the pain they cause or how heartwrenching the uncertainty can be. Your story is very well-deserving of this LOTD. Congratulations.

I'm so glad that your story has a happy ending. So many of them do not. I wish police would take teenage disappearances more seriously! Even if the child is "just a runaway", they still need to be found! Children are not meant to live on the streets and need to be protected from the dangers. Hopefully your story will help others under stand this and also help parents in this situation.

Btw... Congratulations on your LotD! You deserve it. :)

What a story, and so well told. The Search & Rescue I do is usually in the "backcountry," but, still, some of the search tactics we use are the same. I've seen the distress on faces of family of the missing, and I can only imagine what it must feel like to worry and wonder. Your lens really gives a great glimpse into what that reality is like. Thanks for sharing.
