Mission of Music

The day was June 24, 1797, a Saturday, and the priest was Fr. Fermin de Lasuen, Presidente of the California Missions successor to Blessed Junipero Serra. This mission was one of four established by Fr. Lasuen in the summer of 1797 and the fifteenth of the twenty-one missions in Alta, California. (Text and images from mission's official site.)

Mission San Juan Bautista was founded on June 24, 1797 at the present-day location of San Juan Bautista, California. Barracks for the soldiers, a nunnery, the Jose Castro House, and other buildings were constructed around a large grassy plaza in front of the church and can be seen today in their original form. The Ohlone, the original residents of the valley, were converted and brought to live at the Mission, followed by Yokuts from the Central Valley. Mission San Juan Bautista has served mass daily since 1797.

    This is my favorite mission of them all. I love the location and the peacefulness of the view from the mission. My friend was married in this mission so maybe it has a special place in my heart because of that.

    If you go to this mission, you have to visit the San Juan Bakery in the little town. I have family that live not too far from here and they buy their special breads and cakes here all the time. Yum.
