Queen of the Alta California Missions

Mission Santa Barbara was the tenth of the California missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. It was established on the Feast of St. Barbara, Dec 4, 1786. Padre Junipero Serra, who founded the first nine missions, had died 2 years earlier. Serra had planned to build this mission, raising the cross at the presidio of Santa Barbara in 1782. It was Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, his successor, who raised the cross here and placed Padre Antonio Paterna, a companion of Serra, in charge. Paterna put up the first buildings and made the first converts. (Text and image from mission's official site.)

More information on Mission Santa Barbara

Mission Santa Barbara is a Spanish Franciscan mission near present day Santa Barbara, California. It was founded December 4, 1786, the feast day of Saint Barbara, to evangelize the local Chumash (Canaliño) tribe. The Mission grounds occupy a rise between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, and were consecrated by Father Fermín Lasuén, who had taken over the presidency of the California mission chain upon the death of Father Presidente Junípero Serra. Mission Santa Barbara is the only mission to remain under the leadership of the Franciscan Friars since the day of its founding.

Whenever visiting Santa Barbara it's a given you have to visit this beautiful landmark and icon of Santa Barbara! The church inside is just as stunning as the outside, as well as the surrounding neighborhood. It would be a dream to live there, truly! I just returned from a trip and my favorite part was the day we spent at the I Madonnari festival the Mission holds every year. Local artist come out and do chalk art on the grounds of the mission. You eat, drink wine and view truly gifted people at work. We stayed at the Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). Short drive from the Mission and really budget friendly, it was a great place. Just a tip!

The Santa Barbara Mission is not located "near" Santa Barbara, it's located in Santa Barbara. I used to live ten minutes from the mission on foot, and I'm sure it's within the city limits. By the way, nice work on this lens. :-)

Hmm. I don't know for sure but Wikipedia says "near," which is where I got that information. Maybe you should correct it in Wikipedia! :)
