Mississippi Unclaimed Money

As with many states, the Treasury Department handles unclaimed money in Mississippi. The following are potential sources for unclaimed funds:

payroll checks

dormant savings and checking accounts

uncashed money orders

safe deposit box contents

stocks

court deposits

unclaimed insurance benefits

lost cash dividends

unused gift certificates

cash or property like cashiers checks

securities

found utility deposits

mineral royalty payments

unclaimed security deposits

credits

When any of those types of accounts have been dormant for long enough, they are turned over to the state who is charged with holding on to the money until the rightful owner comes forward to claim it.

The trouble lies in actually locating these assets. What if the dormancy period hasn't passed? The state will have no record of them. What if the state simply hasn't input the record in to their system yet? Again, they simply won't have any record to be found.

For these reasons folks need to learn how to search both online and off line, as well as searching resources outside of Mississippi's Treasury Department, and folks need to search often as records could be updated at any time.

Additionally, if you ever lived in another state or even had benefits through a job, you need to search records from outside of the state if you are going to be confident you've explored all avenues.
