All About Miss Organic

My name is Jennifer. I am a child of God, wife to my high school sweetheart, mom of 4, frugal shopper, registered dietitian, full-time blogger, crafter, letterboxer, organic gardener, avid cook and baker... yep that about sums it up!

I was fortunate enough to have found the love of my life in high school. We were in marching band together. We have 4 wonderful children - 3 girls and a boy. Incidentally, our oldest daughter is now at the same high school my husband and I attended and is in the same marching band with the same marching band director!

How I Got My Name

Miss Organic's KitchenAnyone who knows me knows that I am passionate about organic whole foods and organic gardening. One day we were visiting a friend's garden. I saw a bottle of Roundup sitting there and promptly started in on the dangers of pesticides and herbicides. From that day on, he started calling me Miss Organic. The name stuck. I started the Miss Organic's Kitchen blog and the rest is history! I recently started 400 Calorie Dinners and hope to eventually write a cookbook.

In my professional life, I am a registered dietitian, licensed in the state of Ohio. I have been blessed to be able to work out of a home office as a freelance writer. I have plans to apply for grants to start a local food pantry for people with medical conditions that require a special diet. Low income patients would be able to receive food assistance and nutrition counseling at no cost. All in all I stay busy!

Organic Gardening

As you may have guessed from my alias, I garden organically. I have a huge organic vegetable garden every year. I love to grow heirloom and unusual varieties like purple asparagus, lemon cucumbers, and tigger melons. In addition to a wide variety of vegetables, I also grow quite a few varieties of berries. My favorite is our golden raspberries. Yummy! My goal is to eventually grow all our family's food for the year. Nothing beats the taste of home-grown fruits and vegetables.

Right now I am in the process of winter sowing vegetables. I love how much easier it is compared to starting seeds inside. I have about 50 mini greenhouses out on my deck, waiting for spring. I can't wait to see the first little sprouts!

I build our raised beds using the lasagna gardening method. After they are built, I follow the square foot gardening method. I have found that this method works well for the backyard.

Miss Organic is Crafty!

I love all sorts of crafts. Back in 1999, I started an online scrapbooking store called Scraps to Treasures. I ran that for about 5 years until my middle daughter was born. I still love scrapbooking though but have branched into digital scrapbooking.

I also love plastic canvas. I have a huge Christmas village I have crafted entirely from plastic canvas.

Here are my two latest pieces - Claus Chalet and a Reindeer Barn.

I design plastic canvas patterns too whenever the whim hits. I have a lens of free plastic canvas patterns that I have designed.

I also crochet, carve rubber stamps, and dabble in polymer clay.

Geocaching and Letterboxing

A great way to explore nature

Our family loves to take part in high-tech treasure hunting games - geocaching and letterboxing. We have found so many beautiful places that we never knew existed thanks to these wonderful hobbies. We have a signature smashed penny that we leave behind at each geocache we find, as sort of a calling card.

Entering Blog Giveaways

Last but not least, I am the owner of the Blog Giveaway Directory. For the past couple of years, Christmas was completely provided through prizes I won from entering blog giveaways. I started the directory to help others learn about all the wonderful giveaways there are across the blogosphere.

Say Hello!

So now you know a little bit about me. Thanks for stopping by. Do we have any common interests?

What a great idea for a lens. I might have to do something similar to show off what I am about! I share a love of organics with you. I garden completely organically and only grow food or bee attracting plants. I also try to eat organically the majority of the time. We get most of our produce from our local weekly organic farmers markets. We have recently moved, so the garden is getting established, so we will be feeding ourselves more from our garden and less from the markets soon.

So nice to meet you Miss Organic. I'm struggling right now with the "organic" part of gardening. I've never used any sort of pesticide, but I lost a large portion of my crop (last year) to stink bugs. I tried picking them off and other things but never got rid of them. So yes, I may use bug spray this year. We have a lot in common such as crafts, gardening, working online, frugality and baking.
