People often tell me that I am as "stubborn as a Missouri mule". I take that as a compliment since mule owners will tell you that mules are not, in fact, stubborn. They are simply highly intelligent, have well-developed instincts for self-preservation and will normally balk at being put into threatening situations or being overworked.
Other traits of the mule that I proudly claim as my own are: patience, endurance, and curiosity. Mules are also sure-footed, vigorous, strong and courageous. They are very resistant to diseases and live a long time. Now, who would not want to be identified as being like a Missouri mule!

A Missouri Mule by Birth
The mule is the Missouri state animal. And actually I was born in Missouri, in the southeast portion of the state known as the "boot-heel". So, I wear the label "stubborn as a Missouri mule" with pride.I also have the honor of being "healthy as a MULE". The more common expression is "healthy as a horse", but mule owners will certainly tell you that mules are much healthier than horses because they are not as susceptible to diseases or insects, which can bear diseases and cause nasty sores. That is primarily because they have such thick, tough hides to protect them. They are fondly referred to as being "low maintenance". Me, too.
Furthermore, mules do not even have to wear shoes. That's one of the things I love best about them—I hate shoes, too!

Why I Wrote This Article
The secondary reason for writing about these spectacular animals is because I love mule collectibles and artwork. I have a friend who raises mules and has a home filled to every available inch with mule collectibles and artwork. While trying to find a gift for her years ago, I realized how very difficult it is to search online for just mule-the-animal topics. Today, it is even worse.
There are just too many usages of the word mule. Our beloved animal must compete with shoes, sports teams, colleges, software, ATVs, mule deer, rock bands, drug runners, motorcycles, video games and many more "things". You can easily see the problem.
Add to this the fact that many people can't tell the difference between mules, horses and donkeys. Therefore, they will "tag" items with all three. If you are not a mule-addict yourself, you may not be able to tell the difference either. However, present a donkey gift to a mule-lover "becauswe I know you love mules" and—uh-oh!
For a detailed explanation of why this is all so confusing, refer to the Missouri Mule Gift Guide, where I go into detail about this issue.
So, within this article, I will include many items that are perfect gifts for any mule-lover. I have already spent the time necessary to locate lots of perfect gifts - for yourself or the mule-addict that you love!
What Makes Mules Different from Horses and Donkeys?
Because mules are hybrids born of crosses between horses and donkeys, they have characteristics of both and will differ depending on whether the animal is a mule or a hinny.What the heck is a hinny? A hinny is a much rarer type of mule and is the result of the mating that created it.
- Female Horse + Male Donkey = Mule
- Female Donkey + Male Horse = Hinny
- Ears - Mules have ears that are shorter than those of a donkey, but much longer than those of a horse.
- Eyes - Horses have round eyes. Donkeys have D-shaped eyes. Mules have eyes that are somewhat D-shaped, but more oval and they have heavier brows.
- Coats - Horses have smooth, shiny coats, much like human hair. Donkeys have long, coarse hair. Mules have hair that is coarser than horses and shorter than donkeys. They have finer coats in the summer than winter, but not as smooth as a horse.
- Tails - The donkey's tail is covered with short, coarse hair and ends in a tuft of hair. A horse's tail is very full, flowing, and smooth. The mule's tail is much like a horse's except the hair is much coarser, and it is not as full at the top.

- I learned a lot about mules from this lens that I did not know. They are wonderful creatures, and are very helpful as a working animal. I would love to see a 20 mule team pulling a coach that I'm on. :)

- HI: In the 50's I explored the then unknown barrancas of North western Mexico, I often went for weeks with just my mule for company.looking for lost Jesuit mines - successfully - and just exploring in general. She was a wonderful companion and a far better lookout than any dog.
Exerpt from Treasure Net where I have posted quite a bit.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Joseph, do you use hobbles, picket lines, or just turn her loose at night with no hobbles? Which do you prefer?
***************
JI, I staked her out with a 50' line. This gave her a nice radius for grazing in the mts. Although l often had to get up a few times at night to move her to a new grazing spot. Incidentally, NEVER come up behind a sleeping mule on a cold ,frosty, moonless night! sheesh, I lost a perfectly good shirt that way, just once taught me better.
Hobbles were usless with her, she could run faster than I
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It is well worth some extra time spent 'making friends' with your horses or mules (or burros), and get them to come to you when you call, like a pet dog (give them treats to bribe them) as it can be nice when you are in the back country to NOT to have to spend half your time hunting for your stock.
*************
SOOO true , since she could outrun me with hobbles, I decided to have her come to me. I tried sugar, salt, etc., etc., but nothing worked, until I found that she loved CLEAN toilet paper. I only had to wave several sheets in the early morning sun and she would come trotting, gently take it, then flop her big ears back, close her eyes and chomp away, a pretty picture.
However this habit is why I am still a legend in the isolated back high country and canyons.
Once, after I had been on the trail for a few weeks, I spotted a small store/ranch in a pretty little valley so headed for it since I was running short on supplies . As usual, the front door was crowded with men with nothing to do, and as I entered the store they fell silent, obviously checking this gringo - me -out.
I spent a bit of time talking to the owner on Jesuit ruins etc, then finished getting my suplies from the limited stock,. Ss I was walking out of the front door, I remembered that I was running short of the Toilet paper for my mule , sooo, without thinking, I turned around and in a loud voice said " I forgot the toilet paper for my mule".
There was a dead silence for a bit, then It must have been ten minutes before they commenced to pick themselves up off of the floor where they had been rolling around in hysterical laughter.
Sheehs talk about embarrasing.,to this day I am still known as the gringo that w---- his mules A-- with toilet paper.
sheehs in such ways legends are born, however it broke the ice and the word quickly got around and everyone was extremely friendly after.©
