Though you probably wouldn't know it at first glance, Honey starts the series off as a Third Year in the exclusive Ouran Academy. He is the second oldest member of the Host Club (Mori being the oldest). Honey is extremely cute but in spite of all that cuteness he is very strong. Honey is the National Middle School Champion in karate and judo. There is one scene in the anime where the true strength and power Honey possesses is shown. It is said that he has been told by Japan's Defense Minister not to show his full power for fear of other countries thinking Japan held a weapon of mass destruction.

Honey loves to eat sweets and has an entire room full of stuffed animals. Honey use to hide his true self. He always the need to be a "real man", believing that cute things were only for girls or young children. It was Tamaki that told him not to be ashamed of the things that he liked and that liking adorable things could be a good thing. After this realization, Honey no longer felt the need to hide his likes and real personality.

Honey is the oldest of the two children in the Haninozuka family. He has a younger brother that goes by the name of Yasuchika. Honey and Chika (as Honey calls him) are complete and total opposites. Yasuchika resents his older brother because of his love of cute things. Yasuchika thinks that Mitsukuni should have remained president of the martial arts club instead of joining the Host Club. One day, Chika hopes to defeat his brother in combat. Their battles always end the same, with Honey defeating him very easily. Chika doesn't understand how someone who can absolutely adore all things cute can be so strong and undefeatable in battle.

Honey and Mori are cousins who have a very close relationship. They are pretty much inseparable through the entirety of the series. When anything is bothering Honey he runs to Mori. Mori worries and cares about Honey a lot and he gets extremely upset when Honey is mad at him for any reason. Mori follows the age old family tradition of serving the Haninozuka family, even though a marriage a few generations back blended the families together. Honey can commonly be seen riding atop Mori's shoulders or handing Mori his school bag.
