SAC - The Mixer in a Box
Digital mixing consoles are rapidly becoming the norm in live sound reinforcement. With an unparalleled feature set and sound quality, the Software Audio Console is taking the live mixing environment into the virtual world.
The Mixing Console
The heart of a live sound reinforcement system.

.
The mixer takes the signals from the various instruments and vocal mics and combines them into the music that you hear. For the concerts there will be a skilled operator known as a sound engineer mixing the sound. Each sound source will have an individual channel on the mixing console with its own equalization and signal routing. With a hardware console there will also be a large rack of signal processing equipment that will be used to control the sound and add special effects. All of the sources of sounds and all the processing in the rack is hooked into the mixing console so that the engineer can produce the sound that you hear coming through the speaker system.
Mixers used analog circuitry for many years. More recently the analog circuitry has been replaced by digital signal processing. The technology has developed and there is very good sound quality available with the newer digital consoles. The digital consoles also reduce the need for outboard signal processing, as much of this is done within the console.
The industry has gone from the analog mixing console to the hardware digital console, which emulates the old analog console. Now there is a new option available. The heart of the digital console is a dedicated computer for processing sound. There is now software available that can turn a Windows computer into a powerful virtual mixing console.

The SAC System
Mixing in the virtual world

The Software Audio Console is an amazing tool with a large feature set that allows users to mix live sound with a mouse and keyboard or with an attached control surface. A single computer, with the associated equipment can replace a hardware desk and its associated outboard rack.
The software can handle up to 72 full stereo channels. Each channel has a 5 band parametric eq and a switchable noise gate and compressor. The output section has eight full stereo outputs that can be sent to hardware outputs and sixteen virtual outputs that can be routed internally to act as sub-groups or VCA's. The package includes a Front of House console and 24 separate monitor consoles.
Functions that are available with the major hardware digital consoles are available with the SAC system. There is a powerful scenes system in the console. This allows the operator to program any operation of the console and recall that program on the fly. There is also the capability to save a mix session and recall it at a later date. An engineer could copy this mix session to a USB stick and recall it on any other SAC system that he may use in the future.
Because the system runs on a PC there are very powerful networking and unparalleled remote capabilities built into the system. Up to 28 remotes can connect to the system at one time through the networking protocols. There is a permission system for the remotes, so that a remote can control the complete system, just the monitor system, or just one individual monitor mixer.
The SAC system is amazing and is a pleasure to use. I have used the system to mix bands, conventions, events, and concerts. If you would like to find out more about the SAC system please visit my site Mixer in a Box.
