About MixMatchMusic
A community of musicians
MixMatchMusic is the new music community created by musicians, for and about musicians. We've created an environment where musicians easily collaborate online and profit from their art. We've built tools musicians need to engage with and involve fans. And we've put shape to a place where fans discover new music and new musicians.
The Details
MixMatchMusic is the evolution of an idea -- we set out to solve a problem we faced ourselves. Once we set about satisfying our own requirements, it was a natural next step to extend the solution to others.
Profit from your art
It's really hard to find other musicians to collaborate with, and this frustrated us and a lot of other musicians. It seems you're pretty much confined to people you already know, or doomed to spend hours hanging out at music stores and on Craigslist. There's got to be a better way. Fortunately, now there is.
You know, maybe you need a drum riff to complete a song idea. Or maybe you need a drummer to create something entirely new. Or even if you have a drummer, getting together and synching up schedules and locations is tough.
Nothing kills an idea like it lying idle while you search high and low for the other parts you need to flesh it out, or other musicians to help you finish it. So we built a cool online sequencer, the MixMaker, that balances power and functionality with incredible ease-of-use. The MixMaker makes the process of collaboration and discovery fast, and it rewards experimentation.
Getting paid for your art is easy
We believe artists should get paid for their work, regardless of whether they are contributing whole songs or just stems; regardless of whether other musicians are using that art to create new music; and regardless of whether fans are downloading music for ring tones or to use in slide shows or whatever. Any way you look at it, it's your art and you should be paid and attributed for it.
We make this possible by building an enormous amount of transparency into the accounting system, and by communicating with you every time a stem or a song or a work in progress gets downloaded or sold. And when it does get sold, you get $0.85 on every dollar. It's just what you need.
Connecting with fans is easy
We've built a cool widget, called the Remix Wizard, that lives on artists' sites or MySpace pages, and that gives fans instant access to a lightweight version of the where they can do music mash ups.
Here's how it works: you just upload parts of your songs, such as guitar, bass, vocals and drums, into MixMatchMusic. And then invite your fans to click on the widget to mix and match the various parts and create entirely new compositions.
If you follow Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails, you know these bands have been running hugely popular remix promotions that have engaged and involved their fans. Using our Remix Wizard and MixMaker, even the little guys, the indie and unsigned musicians can offer remix promotions. And even the little guys get a cool viral tool to cultivate and engage fans.
We make it easy for you to install and customize. We post all the widgets in a gallery on our site, which promotes discovery. And it's easy for any fan with a broadband connection to play with.
Community is easy
We've built a community that incorporates a lot of what we like about social networks, and threw in some cool social media technologies. It connects musicians with each other and with fans.
The MixMatchMusic artist solution is built on four key building blocks:
1. A dynamic music community. MixMatchArtists contribute parts of songs, called stems, such as guitar riffs, drum and vocal tracks; works in progress; or finished songs. Community members can search thru this catalog of sounds and songs to find stems to complement their own song ideas and works in progress. They can also communicate with other musicians to discuss song or album projects. Casual fans - even those who don't play an instrument - can experiment with the sounds, discover new music and download stems or songs for use as ringtones or soundtracks for slide shows.
2. The MixMaker audio sequencer. Members of the community use the MixMaker to mix, match, mash up and manipulate their stems along with stems contributed by various artists. The MixMaker combines and synchronizes stems and tracks; its edit tools are powerful and precise, but easy-to-use.
3. The MixMatchMusic marketplace. The marketplace is an enlightened system of rights tuned to the unique requirements of digital music and the needs of digital musicians. The marketplace also includes highly transparent accounting processes and transaction logs that ensure musicians know the status of their work, are attributed and paid whenever it is downloaded or used in other art, or even by casual fans as ringtones. Musicians collect $0.85 cents on each dollar transacted.
4. The Remix Wizard is a widget installed on artist sites, blogs or MySpace pages that provides fans direct access to a simplified, lightweight version of the MixMaker. Artists load stems of their songs into the Remix Wizard and invite their fans to mix and match the various parts and create entirely new compositions from those parts. The Remix Wizard is a simple-to-install and easy-to-use widget that gives indie artists a cool viral tool for engaging fans, and allows them to emulate the hugely popular remix promotions mounted by bands such as Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails.
Rules to Live By
"He set his mind to work on unknown arts, thereby changing the laws of nature" - James Joyce
The purpose of our community is for musicians to collaborate to create original, new works out of our community generated library of music.
Artistic Integrity
Only upload your own recordings; do not upload work or samples that you don't have permission to use. Uploading stems as well as full songs benefits the entire community.
Experimentation
Experience real music discovery by experimenting with different sounds. Don't be afraid to try new things. We are not dedicated to any one genre, and hope to see new styles and genres emerge from our community.
Participation
If you find any information/tags/attributions about an audio file that are incorrect, please correct them using our Wiki.
Attribution
Always attribute people for their work. This is critical to the integrity of the community and will help ensure it lasts.
Transparency
We will make sure that all activities on the site are completely transparent and are in the best interest of our community.
Community
We believe the best communities are (i) the ones built by the people who use them, (ii) have a culture of trust, (iii) change the power structure from few small groups of powerful people to many larger groups of people with limited power, and (iv) can be personalized fully to the desires of their users. So let's build a great community!
Communication
It's critical to maintain open channels of communication between you, other users, and MixMatchMusic. If you find any problems with the site or have any suggestions for us, please don't hesitate to contact us. Click here
Support
Support your favorite artists by purchasing music and giving them "tips."
The Future
The Internet is like an organism; we need to evolve along with it. We must work to create our future.
Have Fun
'nuff said.

As the music industry falls apart - and gets rebuilt by the artists and the fans - who knows what'll happen!
My prediction:
MixMatchMusic, at 6pm on November 12, 2008 predicts:
In the next few years, as online tools get increasingly better, more and more artists will leave major labels and handle recording, promotion, and distribution themselves.
