MLM: New Persuasion Techniques
MLM distributors usually fall into two categories. There are the distributors who are not interested in becoming major sponsor; they enjoy taking care of their regular customers and generating local sales. Then there are the distributors who want to be major sponsors and focus on recruiting as many people as possible and creating a large sales force. This second group is ambitious in their pursuits and they have created and shared with others several strategies to persuade new recruits to join the MLM. Two of these strategies use phone technology as part of the persuasion.
The Speakerphone
New MLM members who want to be sponsors sometimes begin recruiting people right away. Because these MLM members are new, they can't possibly know all the details of the MLM or how to successfully persuade others to join. In this strategy, the new MLM members gather a small group of prospects to their home. The presentation is actually given by their sponsor via a speakerphone. This gives the MLM an aura of big business, where conference calls are the norm. These speakerphone meetings are repeated nightly for several weeks, at which time sponsor comes to the home and gives a live presentation. Experts claim that this strategy creates a buzz around the sponsor, and recruits are eager to meet him and join the MLM.
The Teleconference
In this technique the MLM sponsors use a teleconference to persuade prospects into joining the company. This technique is usually used after they have talked and presented several times to the prospect, but they haven't been able to close the deal. In this strategy they invite the prospect to attend a teleconference, listen, and if they aren't interested they can hang up. The prospect dials into the teleconference which is run like a typical business conference call, there is an announcer who greets the callers and tells them how many people are on the call. It is always a high number, in the hundreds or thousands, and sometimes is an international meeting.
The presentation consists of several of the MLM's top leaders who talk about the business. The presentation is very low key yet is polished, and last less than thirty minutes. The idea is convey the feeling that the MLM is an established and successful business that routinely has teleconference calls with its partners throughout the world.
Response to the Techniques
According to some MLM experts these phone persuasion techniques are very successful in attracting and recruiting new members. They claim that the business atmosphere that is created with the two strategies gives the MLM an aura of legitimacy and power that persuades prospects to have confidence that they are joining in with a strong company. But no technique or strategy works on every person. For example, prospects who already have experience in the business world, and especially if they've attended conference calls in the past, will need more than the magic of technology to sell them. They have learned that it is what is said in a meeting, not how, that matters.
