You've joined the perfect business. You've got a helpful sponsor, and you're doing everything according to the system...but you're still not making any money! What in the world are you doing wrong? There's much more to prospecting than what your sponsor or that system has been telling you. Learn the true secrets to MLM & home business prospecting success right here!

MLM Prospecting Through the Ages

Prospecting methods of the past and the problems they presented.

Often in MLM & home business, new distributors are taught how to follow a system in order to get them going. This can include anything from what to say to potential prospects on the phone to how to design a company-specific website. From my experience, one of the most rigid aspects of these kinds of systems is the concept of prospecting. When a new distributor joins a company, they depend on their upline or sponsor to show them how and where to find customers and recruits. And just like the rest of the "system" there are strict rules and guidelines that distributors are made to follow, all with claims of huge success so long as they keep in line with what they're taught. But there is much more to prospecting than most sponsors tell their distributors. There are specific actions and terms that often go untaught, but that can produce much more success at a faster rate than the prospecting systems of the old days. But it's hard to know what needs to be changed without knowing what's not working now. So let's take a look at the prospecting ways of old and the kind of results and behavior they usually led to.

Method #1 - The 3-foot Rule: This is a method that I've personally seen a LOT throughout my time in home business, and was even taught myself many years ago by a former sponsor. The idea is to venture out into public & highly-trafficked places (busy shopping centers or malls, grocery stores, even parks), and strike up conversation with literally anyone who came within 3 feet of you. This conversation was meant to lead into an explanation of your business opportunity. Now in my day, there was only one qualifying question asked: "If I could show you a simple way to earn $100 over and over, would it be work 15 min. of your time?" No other questions were asked, no attempts made to learn anything about the prospect (if you could call a mother in a grocery store an actual prospect). This method was eventually modified to include some small talk before anything business was discussed, but still there were no qualifying questions asked and no attempts to build any kind of relationship. The problem with these was that they alienated and assaulted the "prospect" on rather personal terms. Just because a person is at the grocery store shopping doesn't make them a good prospect for your health supplement business. And just because someone is working a job you might not want to work yourself, doesn't mean they're unhappy with that job or in a position to consider much else at the time. This method totally invaded a person's privacy and took up a valuable portion of time that they had already allotted to something else. Needless to say, I rarely ever saw success achieved with this one (through myself or others I knew).

Method #2 - The Mobile Presentation: I saw this one gain quite a bit of popularity a couple of years ago with the surge in new, portable technology. Distributors would head out into the world armed with their company presentation and opportunity overview audios, CDs or DVDs and a portable CD, DVD or MP3 player. They would then use the 3-foot rule to corner innocent shoppers and push until they'd convinced them to listen to their presentation. This was made even more popular with the introduction of pre-recorded overview calls that a distributor could simply dial into and have their prospect listen for about 10 minutes. At this point we'd gone past the invasion of privacy to outward rudeness as we wouldn't take no for an answer. Why not, we had the presentation right there after all. It wouldn't cost them anything to listen, wouldn't take up but a few minutes of their time, right? The problem with this method is that distributors could often bully prospects into listening, and maybe even into attending a live call. But out of everyone approached, these were the least likely to be good quality mlm leads or prospects. They were rushed into listening and making a decision without being allowed to research and form a healthy curiosity about the product or program.

Method #3 - The 3-Way Call: Probably one of the most popular prospecting methods. A lead or prospect is invited to lunch, or to participate in a phone call wherein the new mlm distributor's upline does all the talking. Not a bad idea for the new distributor who hasn't had a chance to learn everything about the business yet, right? WRONG! There are a few problems with this method. First off, all MLM sponsors don't have their distributors' best interests at heart. In many cases, sponsors are out to steal the glory from the very members they're meant to help. And because they're the "expert" (and the new mlm distributor isn't), prospects will sometimes feel more comfortable with the sponsor and sometimes even end up joining with that sponsor, leaving the new distributor in the dust. The next problem is that this method does nothing to help the new mlm distributor build their reputation as an expert in the field. In fact, it often causes distributors to get complacent and continue to depend on their upline to close sales!

See how these old-school methods are becoming useless in modern-day mlm prospecting? If not, then perhaps we should take a look at today's market and how much it's changed in just a few short years.

Today's Market: How It's Changed & What It Means for MLM & Home Business

In the past when certain marketing issues had not reared their ugly heads, practices such as cold-calling and email marketing were much easier to use. With the rise of home business however, those issues began to show.

In the past, we worked primarily with a marketing strategy known as Interruption-based Marketing. This consisted of marketing methods in which we'd push our messages in was that would interrupt a potential prospect's viewing, reading or listening experience. Unfortunately, over the years new technology and more savvy consumers has made it hard for these methods to achieve the success they once did. The introduction of Tivo & DVR have made it possible for TV viewers to skip commercials, satellite radio has made it possible for listeners to enjoy their favorite radio stations without interruption and pop-up blockers now block once-prominent pop-up ads. Online video viewers are now even training themselves to ignore ads in ad-supported videos (or find something else to do online) while waiting for the main video content to load.

Today, privacy is more important to consumers than ever. With the introduction of the Do Not Call List and the Can Spam Act, businesses (especially home businesses & MLM) are finding it harder to reach potential prospects with the older methods of marketing & prospecting. Many email marketing companies no longer allow anyone affiliated with home business to purchase & use their newsletter & auto-responder services. This is because of all the industries out there, MLM & home business seem to have abused consumer privacy and violated privacy & spam terms more so than any other industry.

Today's market is one that works best with Permission-based marketing methods such as blogging & social networking. Knowing this, it's time to change the way we've been looking at prospecting and conform to more permission-based prospecting methods in order to achieve the level of success that the old methods once did.

Prospecting Success Secrets for Today's Permission-based Market

So just what can YOU do as a distributor to make your MLM & home business prospecting efforts more effective? Take a look at our list of winning secrets to help change your prospecting mindset and get the results you're looking for:
  • Position yourself for prospecting success! Put yourself in places and situations where potential prospects are more likely to approach YOU, not the other way around. Chasing prospects can seem pushy and intrusive, and often leads to poor quality mlm leads. Positioning yourself and your offer so that prospects will approach YOU (such as a health fair if you sell health supplements or skincare products) is more likely to produce serious and interested prospects for your product or service (and potentially for your income opportunity as well)!
  • Prospecting isn't all about you, it's about the prospect. Remember as you approach a prospect or engage them in conversation, that it's not all about you. Sure, you're looking to get the word out about your business. But more importantly, you're trying to determine if that prospect would be a good fit for your offer. Which leads to the next success secret...
  • Listening goes a LONG way! The best way to qualify a prospect and determine if they'd be a good fit for your opportunity is to listen. Sounds elementary, I know. But few truly understand the concept (or use it effectively). If you ask questions, really listen to the answers your prospect gives. It'll save you valuable time and energy!
  • Build relationships to build your business. Taking the time to make a connection with your prospects will get you much further than not doing so. Contrary to popular belief, building a relationship with your prospects isn't a waste of time. According to the known laws of sales, you're not likely to get a sale on the first encounter anyway. It takes an average of 7 interactions in order to successfully close a sale. Why not use that time to build trust and a more personal connection? It'll make getting a sale at that final interaction much more possible!
  • Shoot from ALL cylinders, not just one! By all cylinders, I mean all aspects of your MLM or home business. You'll typically have at least 2 main avenues of income: your product and your opportunity. Every prospect you meet will not be a good fit for your opportunity, and you should realize that the opportunity is not necessarily the best way to make money in every situation. By focusing only on recruiting for your opportunity, you miss out on business and referrals you could be getting from retail sales. Not to mention, the less you play up your products, the less your opportunity seems like a legitimate opportunity. Show your prospects that there is value in what you're selling (and what you're trying to get them to sell) by offering an even amount of information on both.
  • Don't be verbally elusive or mysterious. This method may have worked a few years ago, but with the economy in flux consumers are scrutinizing every penny they spend, and every product they buy. Being vague about your offer will ensure that you're passed over for a competitor who's willing to lay it all out on the line.
  • Don't push! Sometimes what you DON'T say can lead to more success than what you DO say. Once you've said your piece (and make it quick, your prospect's time is valuable), back off and give your prospect a chance to absorb what they've just heard. Many times, you'll hear from them later on if they're truly interested. But being pushy can turn off even the slightest bit of interest they may have had (or their interest in buying from YOU). Don't forget, you're not the only distributor out there. Keep your cool and stay in the running. Only fools rush in!

In my opinion...

Today's prospecting isn't as cut & dry as the prospecting of old. It's more about listening, building relationships and quality, rather than quantity.

What is Prospecting to YOU?

The MLM training of old taught that prospecting was a numbers game. Today, many distributors are discovering that prospecting isn't so much about numbers as building relationships.

What do you think? Is prospecting a numbers game or not?

Definitely!

Karen says:

Though quality plays a large role in the prospecting process (you must target the right prospects, for untargeted ones usually are a waste of time and resources), it's most definitely a numbers game. The more, the merrier.

Not necessarily...
