The Reality of Network Marketing
But if they're supposedly legitimate business models why do so many people lose money to them without ever seeing a dime? That is a question I'm going to address with you in the rest of this page.
What Made Network Marketing a Scam Before
The truth about the "proven" method
In the past, and even today, many MLM associates choose to rely in the "proven" method of operation their business. What the method specifically looks like varies from person to person but it typically has this underlying form:
1)Show "the plan" to a prospect one on one
2) Take the prospect to a "second look" meeting
3) Take the prospect to a local event
4) Take the prospect to a regional event
and if necessary;
5) Take the prospect to a national event
In between those main five steps are any number of follow up calls and three way calls discussing the business with someone higher up.
That's exhausting just to think about, this kind of thing requires a huge time commitment form all the people involved and can be very expensive.
Another way of looking at this would be to pretend you're in a store that required the same item to be checked out at three different tills. That would be really annoying wouldn't it? Would you ever want to shop there again? I wouldn't that's for sure.
This kind of thing makes signing up people very difficult and often winds up with the prospect not wanting to talk with you (as the mlm-er) any more. Then once they leave you look to your upline and ask "where did it go wrong?" and they'll tell you that if you're to be successful it's up to you. And this brings us to the second and most important point, a lack of good leadership.
The problem with the average MLM leadership is they will tell you things like "make a dream board of everything you want in life and put it where you can see it every day." While that sounds all well and good, a six year old can do that kind of thing.
Another gem of wisdom they will say is to repeat the motto "If it's to be, it's up to me." There's a grain of truth to this since you do need to act in order to attract success to yourself but again they've given you no out line of what actions to take to generate success and instead left you sitting there feeling it's all your own fault.
Finally if you've managed attract a few prospects they might tell you to put a picture of your kids (or loved ones or whoever) by the phone so that when you can't call that prospect back then you'll have to tell your kids "sorry you're just not worth it." This one really pisses me off (and yes I've heard this one before) what they're doing here, maybe without their knowing, is emotional blackmail. Forcing you to do something you may not like to do by making the alternative seem worse. What kind of mental state do you think someone is in if that's how they make all of their follow up phone calls? Certainly not one to attract people to them that's for sure.
It's this kind of lack of support and leadership coupled with enforced adherence to the "proven" methods and lack of innovation that causes may network marketers to never see any profit despite all their efforts and it often leads many to quit with even less than they had when they signed up to this "wonderful opportunity to make money on autopilot." By now I've probably painted a pretty glum picture of what network marketing is but I promise you it gets better.

How to generate your own success
So what do you do If you don't want to wind up like one of the examples from the previous section? Well the first thing I would recommend is to STOP! Take a deep breath, hold it for a second and exhale slowly, do this at least twice. It's important to do this and clear out all the garbage. Free up your mind from all the people who say that network marketing is just a scam, no one ever makes money at it, even if you make a profit it's because you're stealing from other people, or whatever problems people have because there will always be more to come. Now that we're in a better frame of mind I want to talk about the first thing I think you need in order to generate success.Focus on the here and now, not what tomorrow's going to be like, not what yesterday was but on what you have to get done today. And take the emotional attachment out of your business. I mentioned Dream boards above, those are really tools to get you emotionally involved with your business and that's not a good frame of mind to operate from. Instead You need what many call a "mindset of abundance" meaning you're not worried when someone doesn't sign up with you because you realize there are other people out there still. It helps with stress management to think that way.
Secondly go look for help. It's out there if you're open too it. Think of it like this, for almost every job out there, there exists some kind of training or set of tools that you need to learn how to use. Well why should network marketing be any different? The truth is modern network marketers who want to take their business to the next level have decided to join the digital age with their own websites and learn to use tools like youtube, blogs, squidoo, twitter and a host of other resources, there really is no reason to ignore them. Once you have a source of guidance take your tools an commit to some massive action, that is using your online mlm tools to create a new piece of content at the very least least once a day.
The last thing I want to blab about right now is a little thing referred to as monetization. I'll explain, but first I need to talk a bit about target markets. The best customers are people that are actively looking for your product, they've already sold themselves on it and are likely to buy it again. The exact same is true of network marketing prospects as they already see a need for an MLM home business. So what really is monetization? It's getting the people who said no to your opportunity to still buy something from you. I'm not talking about your products so much as an information product about marketing your business online or even starting a home based business. These information products are things you can market and sell that will help generate some cash flow for you in the beginning.
So that's really what monetization is, now how do you make it work for you? Well the popular saying is "No one who bough a drill ever wanted a drill, they wanted a hole." All this means is that people have needs and they want a solution to that need. More financial security, to work from home, more free time, these are examples of "holes" and your opportunity might be an example of a "drill" so what you do is market information on starting a home based business and you insert your MLM business as a viable option. This has the person who read your e-book or brochure or whatever pre-sold on the idea of joining an MLM and if you've taken care to promote yourself as an MLM business owner they will want to hear more from you as you've formed a relationship in their mind. This is also called relationship marketing.
