What is Mixed Martial Arts? (MMA)

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is like the name says, a combination of various martial arts combined into one lethal style to cover all different situations and scenarios of a fight.

Muay Thai for stand up fighting, Brazillian Jujitsu for on the ground, boxing, wrestling, grappling and various other styles inbetween.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete. The term may also be used, less correctly, to describe hybrid martial arts styles.

Modern mixed martial arts competition emerged in American popular culture in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Initially based on finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors of various arts were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety. In the following decade, MMA promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport,.

MMA and the creation of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Champion)

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts organization, currently recognized as the largest MMA promotion in the world.

The UFC began as a single-event tournament to find the world's best fighters irrespective of their style, and was based upon Brazilian vale tudo fighting. Although there were a limited number of rules, fighting in the UFC was marketed as no holds barred, and contests were often violent and brutal. Early UFC fights were less sport than spectacle, which led to accusations of brutality and "human cock fighting" by Senator John McCain and others. Political pressures eventually led the UFC into the underground, as pay-per-view providers nixed UFC programming, nearly extinguishing the UFC's public visibility.

As political pressure mounted, the UFC reformed itself, slowly embracing stricter rules, becoming sanctioned by state athletic commissions, and marketing itself as a legitimate sporting event. Dropping the no holds barred label and carrying the banner of mixed martial arts, the UFC has emerged from its political isolation to become more socially acceptable, regaining its position in pay-per-view television.

MMA Ultimate Fighting Champion Legend Anderson Silva

I got introduced to UFC and MMA by a friend of mine one weekend when we were chilling at his house and decided to watch the latest season on TV.

I must say that I was really impressed, UFC is a reality tv show, not just pure fighting. All the conestants get split up into two groups, each with a really good fighting coach, and all the boys stay together in one house. This leads to a lot of pressure and friction, because the psychological pressure of knowing you have to fight a really experienced fighter the next day is huge.

Figths between contestants are mixed and matched according to the fighter's styles and skills and sometimes personal agenda's.

Anderson Silva is an amazing UFC fighter, just look at some of his clips below!
