Marilyn Manson

Often labled "shock rock" by both detractors and fans, Marilyn Manson, both the man himself and the band, has been making waves in the world since 1994, whether it be with intriguing social commentary or with outrageous acts at phenomenal live shows.

Marilyn Manson has done much in his career, ranging from performing in various indie and big budget movies, to opening his own art gallery, and, recently, lending his name to a good cause, Project Nightlight.

What is it about Marilyn Manson that is so alluring to millions worldwide? Stick around, learn a little, and find out.

Portrait and Smells Like Children

1994 - 1995

In 1994, the band's first album, Portrait of an American Family, was released, but, for the most part, remained an obscure album that few ever heard of until years later, even though the band toured nearly constantly to generate interest in the album.

In 1995, an EP, Smells Like Children, was released, that featured remixes and covers including the song that indefinitely helped to propel the band to fame, Sweet dreams, originally performed by The Eurythmics.

Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals

1995 - 1998

It wasn't until 1996, with the release of Antichrist Superstar, that Marilyn Manson was a household name, infamous for the blasphemy and hatred in lyrics that no one really ever bothered to understand. All the infamy culminated when a suit was brought against Manson because a teenage boy killed himself while listening to the band's second album.

His next album was spun in a different light. While not as "dark" or aggressive as Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals managed to be a very cynical look at one's self, and the world around you. However, many fans of the band who listened for all the wrong reasons could not comprehend the new turn the band had taken. Even image-wise, this was a new band entirely, emulating the styles of bands such as David Bowie.

Holy Wood and The Golden Age

2000 - 2003

Though seemingly toned-down, all was not well for Marilyn Manson. In April, 1999, two teenage boys walked into their school and proceeded to kill their peers and then, themselves. This, to most people, does not correlate to Marilyn Manson, but many took it as their duty to find a cause, and to blame Marilyn Manson was the easy way out.

Marilyn Manson, the man, was devastated by these accusations, and claims he walked up to the attic in his house, and did not exit for three months. By the time he came down, he had fodder for a new album that would serve as a retaliation against his accusers, a memoriam, and a criticism of American values. This album was Holy Wood, and dealt with themes of martyrdom, loneliness, violent American culture, and the shock of Americans when it manifests itself in something such as the Columbine incident.

In the year 2003, Manson was set to release what he happily called "my most commercial" album yet. This was The Golden Age of Grotesque, inspired by DaDa, dandyism, swing dancing, and a hell of a lot of absinthe. The album received rave reviews and debuted number 1 on the Billboard charts, though it was quickly swept away. This album is the primary rift between Manson fans; Many believe that the album is trash and that Manson failed miserably, while yet more believe that it falls right in line with the evolution of Manson's work.

Eat Me, Drink Me and beyond

2007 to present

Now we have in our hands "Eat Me, Drink Me". The newest album is the latest phase of the evolution of Marilyn Manson, and this time we find ourselves with a closer glimpse into the man himself. Coming off of a bad relationship (and divorce) and finding himself with a new soul mate, Manson has written his most introspective and personal album yet. The fanbase, for the most part has received the album well, though many are somewhat disappointed.

Right around the turn of the 2007/2008 year, Manson announced something perhaps more shocking than anything he had done before. For the second leg of his Eat Me, Drink Me tour, he would be rejoined by long time friend and former bassist, Twiggy Ramirez, for what appeared to be more than a temporary basis. And indeed, Twiggy rejoined Manson on stage in what turned out to be an amazing final leg in the tour, and the two appear to be working on new studio material together. The circumstances of their unexpected reunion are fleshed out in an exclusive MansonUSA interview, Everyone Will Suffer Now. Lengthy, but a highly recommended read.

And that's Marilyn Manson, up 'til today.
