Mnemonics- Memory Aid to Retain Information and Facts
Mnemonics has been around for a very long time. Mnemonics is a system to improve memory and retain information. They usually consist of a sing-song type rhyme or a list used as an acronym. Mnemonics as a memory aid has existed since at least the time of the ancient Greeks. Mnemonics is actually derived from the Greek word 'mnemonikos' which means 'of memory'.
It is not completely understood why mnemonics work, but there is no doubt that mnemonics are a very effective memory aid. Medical students and law students use mnemonics to memorize lots of technical information.
I have always been fascinated with mnemonics. They amaze and entertain me. It's amazing how the mind works. I am going to break the rest of this lens into mnemonic categories that I still remember. I will add to it as I remember new mnemonics or family and friends (that's you) help add to my list. If you have a mnemonic that I don't have listed, just add it to the Mnemonics comments box near the bottom. And thank you for the assistance.
Mnemonics Headlines
American History Mnemonics
This is a classic mnemonic and the very first one that I learned. I was having a terrible time trying to remember the date. My mom recited this simple mnemonic verse, and I've never forgotten the date that Christopher Columbus landed in North America since. Amazing!
Some people find this version easier to remember:
In 14 hundred and 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue
I'm assuming because it has a better rhyme scheme.
So my father ate grapes last Tuesday, very awful tart Napas
This is the order in which states seceded from the Union during the Civil War. Even the comma has a purpose; this is when Abraham Lincoln sent for troops. The states after the comma are the ones that seceded after Lincoln's order.
The states in order are South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina
Added note: There is a controversy over which state was actually the last to secede, Tennessee or North Carolina. You can decide this one for yourself.
Another Civil War mnemonic-
In 1861 the war begun
In 1862 the bullets flew
In 1863 Lincoln set slaves free
In 1864 there still was a war
In 1865 hardly a man is still alive
This explains- 1861 start of war, 1862 start of battles, 1863 the final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, 1865 war is finally over with great loss of life
In 1903 the Wright brothers flew free
The first successful flight of the Wright brothers
Spelling Mnemonics
Or when sounding like 'A' as in 'neighbor' or 'weigh'
And 'weird' is just plain 'weird'.
(Weird doesn't follow the rule.)
How to spell 'ie' and 'ei' words, and one of the exceptions to the rule is the word 'weird', although there are a few others.
A friend to the end
The word 'friend' ends with 'end'.
A rat in the house must eat the ice cream.
Mnemonic for how to spell A-R-I-T-H-M-E-T-I-C
Use the first letter in each word of the sentence
When eating dessert, I always get seconds.
Do you want one S or two? I'll take two for dessert.
Two different mnemonics for how to spell dessert and desert. Dessert always uses two S's. The first mnemonic example uses the word 'seconds' to stand for 'second s'. Rather clever, don't you think?
Rhythm helps your two hips move
Mnemonic to spell rhythm- use the first letter of each word
Only cats' eyes are narrow
Use the first letter of each word to spell 'ocean'- catchy mnemonic!
Mnemonics for Math
Mnemonic to help remember the order of operations in algebra: parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract, then do in left to right order. Remember the phrase and use the first letter of each word in the phrase to trigger the order of operations. Simple!
Lucky Cows Drink Milk
