Microsoft Targets Apple for Next Generation Mobile Phone Development

Apple's iPhone has taken the world by storm. The easy to use technology, small handset and great looking operating system have all contributed towards the success of the iPhone.

Microsoft is lagging some way behind in this race and is now ready to have another serious go at the mobile sector.

So once again we have another Microsoft vs Apple battle, only this time its mobile :)

Windows Mobile Gets a New Name

In a recent interview, product manager for Windows Mobile David Weeks admitted that Microsoft was about 2 years behind in the mobile phone technology arena.

After this unusually honest declaration he went on to add that Windows Mobile is the very highest priority after Windows 7.

To show that they mean business a new version of Windows Mobile is due for release on October 6 2009. Windows Mobile 6.5 is the first major revision to the product line in over 2 years.

This version will no longer carry a version number and is simply called Windows Phone.

Business and Consumer Markets

Manufacturers are split in two camps. Can Microsoft be the first real cross-over?

The mobile phone market is currently split into two distinct halves:
The business and consumer markets

At the consumer end of the market the is iPhone and Android. For business users, Windows Mobile and Blackberry.

Each of the operating system providers is trying to break into the other space but Windows Mobile could be the first platform to actually achieve this. It seems that recent research shows whilst many people own an iPhone, they also have a secondary mobile device to connect to their email systems which are typically Microsoft driven.

Microsoft is hoping to offer one handset to cater to all markets. They are some way off delivering this as although Windows Mobile can theoretically run 31 apps in parallel to Apple's 1 app, they still do not have great touch screen support for example. At least the touch screen module has been upgraded and it is no longer necessary to use the stylus that caused Windows Mobile users such problems in the early releases.

I guess this comes from having to support 150+ mobile phone devices across many manufacturers where as Apple own the technology and the operating system.

You can find loads of mobile phones, including Windows Mobile devices, over at mobiles.co.uk.

Windows Mobile Store?

Microsoft have finally learned that offering an alternative to Apple's App Store is a very good idea. They are actively encouraging young start ups and colleges to develop for the platform by offering big discounts and freebies.

According to Mr Weeks there are over 20,000 apps available for the current Windows Mobile platform, its just that Microsoft have not done a good job of commercialising the offerings.

Who do you prefer?

Microsoft or Apple - You decide!

OK so its a straight choice between Apple and Microsoft. I am not just interested in this for phones, I want to know what you think about these 2 overall.
