About Mobile Broadband
Everything you need to know...
According to Wikipedia mobile broadband is"the name used to describe various types of wireless high-speed internet access through a portable modem, telephone or other device. Various network standards may be used, such as GPRS, 3G, WiMAX, LTE UMTS/HSPA, EV-DO and some portable satellite-based systems."
To put it simply Mobile Broadband is an internet connection which does not use a physical system such as cable or your telephone line. A receiver (normally a USB 'dongle' or a Mobile Broadband card is needed as is an account with a broadband provider.
Mobile Broadband has several advantages over traditional broadband.
1. It does not require a phone line. Now that almost everyone has a mobile phone many of us do not use a landline. It may not be worth installing or paying monthly fees for a phone line if you only use it to connect to the internet.
2. It is portable. As Mobile Broadband does not rely on a fixed line it can be used anywhere that there is a signal. You can take your laptop out into the garden when it is sunny or check your emails whilst on the train.
3. It moves when you do. This is particularly important if you travel back and forth to university or live in rented accommodation, there is no hassle of closing your account when you move, just take your laptop and dongle with you!
Types Of Mobile Broadband
There are several ways to receive Mobile Broadband and various tariffs and contracts provided by different companies. Most people use a USB 'dongle' to receive their mobile broadband. The dongle typically looks like a USB storage drive and often has a light to show when it is connected.
It is also possible to use a a Mobile Broadband card although these are becoming less popular.
Most providers offer pay as you go mobile broadband but monthly contracts are also offered.
Choosing Your Set-up
What you need to know
There is much debate about who offers the best mobile broadband package. The best way to get the right package for you is to take some time to consider what it is you need based on how you use the internet.Heavy Users
If you use the internet a lot including downloading songs and uploading photos then you might need an option that allows for heavy use. An unlimited package will mean that you do not need to worry about going over your monthly limit.
Light Users
If you only use your connection infrequently, perhaps just to check your emails and update Facebook then a lower monthly limit may be enough for you. 1 and 3 GB allowances are offered by most companies.
Those Without A Laptop
If you don't yet have a laptop then bear in mind that some contracts include a free laptop.
