The Development of Mobile VoIP

In the telecommunications sector the market is heavily leaning towards VoIP solutions now. Largely due to the rise of the internet and the growing infrastructure in place to transfer data instead of the more traditional POTS (plain old telephone system) technology. This has had the advantage of being much cheaper to operate due to the way contracts work; data transfer instead of "minutes".

How has this helped?

Cabling ServicesThis development of technology and reduction in costs has opened up much of the more advanced telecommunications to smaller businesses, who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford complex telephony systems. The costs have in fact been reduced so much that many features which used to be available only to very high end businesses are now available free for the public from companies such as Skype and others.

Moving into mobile...

More recently, there has been a huge jump the percentage of people owning smartphones, so naturally, personal VoIP usage has spread to people's mobile phones in the form of apps. Most major platforms including android and iOS as well as some others have tools available to use VoIP calling instead of calling via a service provider.

But you're just replacing minutes with data, how can that be cheaper for mobile?

Wireless mobile towerWhich is true. On top of that data usage on most 3G networks is flaky, restricted and often not fast enough for decent call quality, however many people work in places with wifi internet connections or have wifi connections at home. You can even connect to wifi while out and about through restaurants and coffee houses which have free internet connection and these connections more often than not are far more reliable for VoIP. This infrastructure has drastically increased in the past few years has given people the ability to be able to use free (or already paid for at least) internet connections in conjunction with their phones to contact others. These services are typically very cheap, if not free. This offers a fantastic opportunity for anybody looking to save money on their phone contract to be able to make calls for next to nothing.

And for business applications...

Naturally such apps have their pure business variations as part of business phone contracts; normally with a hosted VoIP service or self maintained PBX system. This can allow people to have calls forwarded from their office phones directly to their mobile, making them contactable anytime, anywhere; a fantastic augmentation for business. For companies with employees overseas too, roaming rates through VoIP can be drastically reduced assuming you can get an internet connection.

So next time you see a fun little app that might help you call a relative half a world away, why not think how you could use it to enhance your business too!
