Mobile is also one of the Gulf Coast's cultural centers, serving as home to several museums, a symphony orchestra, a professional opera, a professional ballet company, and much more. Mobile is also the true home of Mardi Gras, not New Orleans as many people assume. Mobile was the first city in the nation to host Mardi Gras, or Carnival, in 1830.
