MobileMe for Your Online Life
MobileMe is Apple's package of online services that includes a powerful sync feature that lets you sync across computers, an iPhone and iPod Touch. With MobileMe, you can sync your Mail accounts and email messages, Address Book contacts, iCal calendars, Safari bookmarks, and more. In addition, MobileMe gives you 20GB of online storage space and 200GB of bandwidth for transferring files.
Unfortunately, for those of us who love the many features of MobileMe, Apple just announced that MobileMe will end in June, 2012 and it will be replaced by iCloud, which doesn't seem to have nearly as many features. Apple says iCloud will be free. However, that is not quite true for Mac users since iCloud will only run on Lion (Mac OS X 10.7), due to be released next month. Lion, as of now, will only be available as a paid download from the Mac App store. In other words, iCloud for Mac users will cost minimally an upgrade to Lion. If you're still using Mac OS X 10.5 on your Mac, you'll have to first upgrade to Snow Leopard and then to Lion (i.e., you'll be paying for two upgrades to get the "free" iCloud).

MobileMe is Apple's package of online services that includes syncing features, hosting services, online storage space, email server, and more. Although MobileMe had a rocky start when it was first launched, I'm a big fan of the service. I've been using the service, formerly known as .Mac, since its inception and it has improved over the years, with Apple often adding new features. In this list, I give 10 reasons why I think MobileMe is a good investment, even in today's difficult economic times.
- Easy-to-use Syncing Feature - If you use Mail, Safari, Address Book, or iCal, MobileMe makes it easy to sync your data over multiple computers. You can set MobileMe to sync automatically or you can manually activate syncing whenever it is convenient for you. Even if you have only one computer, the syncing feature is beneficial because it provides an offline backup for some of your most important data.
- Good Spam-controlled Email Service - I have several different email accounts, including a Gmail account, and my MobileMe email account is the only one that is practically spam free. Apple's server, apparently, does a very good job of catching and deleting spam before it gets to your mailbox. If you hate spam, you'll love MobileMe's email service.
- Cheap Web Hosting Service - MobileMe provides you with several options for hosting websites. You can use iWeb or a similar web design application and upload a website to the Web folder on your iDisk. Another option that many people don't know about is the Sites folder on your iDisk. This folder can contain as many separate sites as you want and you can work with the folder even when you are not connected to the Internet if your iDisk is mounted on your Desktop (more about that later in the list). A third option for hosting websites is the next item on this list - Web Galleries.
- Easy-to-create Photo Websites - If you use iPhoto, you can easily and quickly create photo albums and upload them to your MobileMe account directly from iPhoto. In addition, you can password-protect your albums and allow uploading and downloading of photos by people who view the album. MobileMe will sync your online albums with iPhoto whenever you launch the application and you are connected to the Internet. Even if you don't use iPhoto, you can create Web Galleries using the online MobileMe interface.
- Easy-to-use Online Application - The online MobileMe application is easy to use and requires no instructions to quickly get started with it. You can view and use your contacts, calendars and email just as you would use Address Book, iCal or Mail. You can also create Web Galleries and upload photos to them or upload files to your iDisk for safe offsite storage.
- Safe, Off-site Storage - It is always important to store critical data in locations separate from your hard drive and MobileMe provides you with online storage space for this purpose. There are three ways you can place data on your iDisk: (1) upload it using the MobileMe online interface (reason #5 above), (2) mount your iDisk on your Desktop and transfer the files to the disk (see the next item on the list), or (3) use the free Backup application included in the MobileMe package (see item 8 on this list).
- Easy-to-use Extra Hard Disk - Your iDisk is a virtual disk that can be mounted on your Desktop and used the same way that you use a hard drive. You can even mount the iDisk permanently so that most of the folders are available even when you are offline. Once your iDisk is on your Desktop, you can copy and delete files from it just like you do with a hard drive. If it is permanently mounted, you can sync it with its virtual counterpart whenever you need to by connecting to the Internet and clicking one small button.
- Free Backup Application - MobileMe comes with a free backup application that provides you with features usually only found in commercial applications. For example, you can create custom backup sets and schedule the application to do the backups automatically to your iDisk, to a hard disk or to CDs or DVDs.
- Huge Storage Space and Bandwidth - MobileMe provides you with 20 GB of space for your email, websites and data backups. In addition, you get a whopping 200 GB of transfer bandwidth each month. If you use your iDisk for hosting websites, this bandwidth should be ample for even well-visited sites.
- Great Price for Combined Services - If you are only going to use the syncing feature of MobileMe, it is probably not such a wise investment, but if you want or need the additional features of a good spam-free email service, web hosting, data storage, and a backup application, MobileMe is a terrific package. A hosting service alone could easily cost more than the yearly price for MobileMe and a comparable backup application usually costs $30 or more.

Creating a MobileMe Web Gallery in 3 Easy Steps
tutorial for creating a Web Gallery photo album using the online MobileMe application
(Copyright 2009, Claire J Rottenberg)
Creating a Web Gallery photo album is easy with the online MobileMe application.
Step 1: Sign into Your MobileMe Account

Go to www.me.com/gallery and sign into your MobileMe account. The MobileMe Web Gallery pane will open.
Step 2: Create a New Web Gallery

To create a new Web Gallery, first click the Action Menu button (cogwheel) on the Toolbar and select New Album from the drop-down menu. A settings pane will open.
Type a name for your album and decide on the options you want. You can permit any visitor to your website to download your photos, upload new photos to your website or add photos to the website by emailing them to a special Web Gallery email address. Since you cannot password protect a Web Gallery album created with the MobileMe online application, it is not advisable to check the uploading options under Allow.
If you don't want your photo album to appear on the index page for your Web Gallery albums, check the box to "Hide album on my Gallery page." Checking this option will make your album more difficult for unwanted/uninvited visitors to find.
Step 3: Upload Your Photos

When you have finished selecting settings for your album, click the Create button. Another pane will open and you can select photos from your hard drive to add to the album. After you select the photos to add, a progress pane will open.
When you have finished adding photos to your new album, the URL address for the website will appear on the MobileMe Toolbar and you can visit the site by clicking on the address.
Using the MobileMe Backup Application in 4 Easy Steps
tutorial for using Apple's Backup application
(Copyright 2009, Claire J Rottenberg)
If you've purchased MobileMe, you have a free backup application waiting for you on your iDisk. Go to your iDisk, either on your Desktop or on the Internet interface, and go to the Software folder. Inside that folder, you'll find another folder that says "Backup for Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later or 10.5." Open the folder and, if your iDisk is mounted on the Desktop, drag the Backup.dmg file to a location on your hard drive. If you're using the online MobileMe interface, click the Download button on the Toolbar to download the file to your hard drive.
Once the file is on your hard drive, double-click it and follow the online instructions for installing it.
1. Select Your Backup Type

Launch the Backup application. A pane will open, letting you select the type of files you want to back up. For this tutorial, we'll select "Personal Data & Settings." Your other initial choices are Home Folder, iLife, and iTunes Library. Once you've created one backup set, you'll have an additional "Custom" setting that you can use. For now, put a check in the box for "Personal Data & Settings" and click the Continue button.
2. Select Items to Back Up

Click the plus symbol under the top section of the pane that opens (the section that says "Backup Items"). Select the Files & Folders tab on the next pane and navigate to the files or folders you want to back up. For this example, I've selected the folder that contains my Safari browser settings. Click the button that says "Include this folder" and then click the Done button.
3. Schedule a Backup

You'll be taken back to the main pane and this time you'll click the plus symbol under the bottom section of the pane (the one that says "Destination and Schedule"). The next pane will let you select the Destination volume (your iDisk, a hard drive or a CD or DVD). You'll also be able to set a time schedule for the backup to occur automatically. In my example, I've set the schedule for Every Day at 9:30 P.M. After setting a schedule for the backup, click the OK button.
4. Let Backup Do its Job

You can now manually start the backup by clicking the Backup Now button on the main pane or you can wait for Backup to do its work automatically, according to the time you entered on the scheduling pane. Once Backup starts working, you'll have a pane with a progress bar so you can monitor the backup if you want.
That's all there is to creating a scheduled backup with Apple's Backup application that is part of the MobileMe package.
MobileMe and Your iDisk
by Claire J Rottenberg

Chatting with friends recently about MobileMe made me realize that many people do not use the MobileMe iDisk features to their full extent. Of course, Apple hasn't been advertising some of the features as particularly valuable for MobileMe users. However, in the past, some of these features were the reasons many people chose .Mac over other online services. These valuable features are:
1. Keeping your iDisk mounted on your Desktop
2. Using the free Backup application that is included with MobileMe
3. Hosting websites from your iDisk
4. Storing documents, images, music, and video on your iDisk

Troubleshooting Help for MobileMe

If you have a MobileMe account, there might be times when you need help with some aspect of MobileMe. For example, last week I had problems syncing my iDisk. Fortunately, Apple has excellent services available to help you with troubleshooting and solving MobileMe problems.
Apple has an online chat option to help you with MobileMe. Just go to www.apple.com/support/mobileme/ and select one of the MobileMe topics on the left side of the page. If chat is available, you'll see a Chat Now button. When you click that button, you'll be connected to a MobileMe support person who will try and work through your problem with you.
If the chat service is not available, Apple provides some other options. First, there are FAQ pages you can go to from the main MobileMe support page that often will have answers to your problems. Apple also has a significant number of discussion boards for MobileMe. Many of the people who read and respond to questions on the boards are experienced Mac and MobileMe users and they often can provide help for problems you might experience with your MobileMe account.
