A modeling portfolio is essentially a compilation of photos that highlight your body of work as a model. This is the resume that you provide to potential clients for them to initially assess your capabilities. Since the modeling industry is a business based on first impressions, the visual impact of your portfolio is extremely important.

When putting together your portfolio, pay serious thought to your choice of photographer, whose job is to capture your assets in the best light, while accentuating your individuality and special flair. Competition is stiff and you cannot just be another pretty face, you will need to have an edge in order to be noticed.

· Do some research on the photographer beforehand to determine his/her shooting style and if it meets your expectations.

· Meet with him or her before the photo shoot so you can discuss the creative concept of your portfolio, how you want to be presented and if you have any religious or cultural beliefs that might affect your modeling.

· Discuss what themes and looks you want to try out, such as glamour, swim wear, or lifestyle. You can then identify the details of the shoot, such as the location, time and outfits to be worn.

· Be prepared on the day of the shoot. If an agency is representing you, a stylist will fix your hair, make-up and wardrobe. However, if you are a freelance model, you may have to do it yourself prior to the shoot.

· Do not be afraid to communicate with the photographer during the actual shoot, such as if you want to try out different poses or are uncomfortable in any way.

Effective portfolio images are those that best market your appearance and uniqueness. While there are many requirements that every model must have a little bit of uniqueness can set you apart from the others. Don't be afraid to discuss how to set yourself apart from everyone else with your
