Model Railroad Layouts

In my opinion it is very important that a model train and railroad look good, that is the whole point of this amazing hobby. That is why I think the layout of the model railway in particular is very important. Enthusiasts spend hours and hours making scenery, caring for the trains and designing the layout. Some people have a very simple model train layout which is oval in shape and doesn't have any scenery, other people, who usually have more experience spend more time developing there model railway to include extras such as a good railroad layout and scenery.

The main parts of the layout are of course the train tracks and the scenery, these can both be quite complex to set up initially. You will also have to consider your surroundings; if space is an issue you may not be able to have a large layout. Let's talk about the track a little more, shall we?

Model tracks are the base of any railroad and once the track is set up and running it will be hard to change so it is best if you plan the track carefully. Will you have a table dedicated to your model train or maybe even a room to devote to your model train layout?

There are four main layouts that you can use. These are the continuous loop, point to point tracks, out and back (pear shaped track) and the shunting station. Each have their own particular use and more than one of these layouts can be used to create a more complex model railroad.

Next you will need to think about the train stations and the layout that you are going to use for these, train stations add more interest to the railroad and also make the track more realistic. Terminal stations are the most common station used in model train layouts however junctions and through stations are also commonly used.

These are just the basics of your model train layout, there are a whole range of different models and railroad tracks that you can used to improve on your model train layout.
