What is a model horse?

Model horses are scale replicas, usually cast in plastic or ceramic, but sometimes in other materials.

Some collectors amass hundreds or even thousands of models (see collecting lens), and opportunities exist for virtual and live exhibition (see showing lens) and artists who repaint and even resculpt these models (see customizing lens).

As you can see, model horses are far more than just toys!

Makes and types

Some of the more well known producers of mass market scale figurines are Breyer, Peter Stone, Hartland, Hagen-Renaker, with Ertl and Schleich being less favored among collectors.

Artist resin figures have become more popular during recent years, with limited runs giving the models a higher value, and finishing by skilled artisans making each piece unique and treasured.

Which is better?

Model horse collectors are generally loyal to their favorite "make" or company. What's yours?

Which one rules?

Breyer; BMC forever!

Wysiwigs says:

Most definitely! :o)

WSG says:

Oh, it has to be Breyer Horses. I'm a sucker for the classics. I played with them as a child and collect them as an adult. My parents thought horses were a "phase," but they were sorely mistaken. They're still a big part of my life.

Peter Stone, no doubt.

I still have most of my Breyers. Interestingly enough, I have a number of Breyer models that look just like a number of our real horses :o) Great lens ~ 5*

I'm always interested to hear how someone goes about their collecting. Is there a particular breed, or color, or collection that you target, or do you just collect what you love at the moment? I'm a bit of a breed focused collector. I'm trying to collect on of each of the Breyer horse breeds. That should keep me busy for some time.

Ready to dive in?

You can buy many different types of models brand new, but you have to know where to look. Breyers can be found in the toy section of many large chains, and online at Amazon and other retailers.

eBay is a great source for less expensive, gently used models if you are looking to start a collection, or want a cheaper "body" to attempt repainting.
