How to model a Poser dress and shoes with Cinema.
Of course this is not all the work which is necessary to make Poser clothes. First something needs to be modeled, after that the mapping needs to be done.
Then textures (the "fabric") will be painted. The clothes must be cut in the same way the
Poser figure is cut (chest, abdomen, hip and a lot more). Then the clothes need a rigging to make it possible that they move with the Poser figure they are made for. Joints need to be adjusted for best results.
When all this is done (which is a lot of work) you have a finished clothing item :)
I hope you will have fun to see the the modeling part of the progress of making such a clothing set :)

Software I used for this clothing set
Poser 7 or Poser Pro. I'm using also Poser 6 - but only for testing my sets to see if all works fine in an older Poser version.
Cinma 10 for modeling and mapping
Photoshop CS3 for making the textures (the fabric pattern).
I'm starting with Kali without head and hands ...

I import Kali from the Poser geometries folder and save different versions of her body for my work to a Cinema folder.
I have "Kali head only" for hats, hair, earrings and such things.
"Kali body without head and hands" for all kind of clothes.
"Kali legs only" for socks and shoes and similar things.
and some more versions. You get the idea ;)
Having such versions makes it easier to see what I'm doing when I model the clothes.
You may wonder why Kali has these different colors on her body....
The reason is that Kali has a lot of different bodyparts: hip, abdomen, chest, collars, shoulders, hands, buttocks, legs and so on.
The mesh I'm modeling in Cinema needs to be cut between the bodyparts.
That makes it possible that the clothes move the same way Kali does.
Ok - on the image above you can see the base mesh I modeled for her dress.
Mesh in symmetry object

On this image you can see that I'm only modeling one side of the mesh.
The mesh sits in a symmetry object which adds the second side.
The modeled dress

On this image you can see what I modeled from the base mesh.
The way I work is selecting edges, extruding them and move them to the right place. Then I adjust the new points (vertexes) so all looks nice and smooth. This method is called poly-by-poly.
When I tell somebody how I work they often think that it takes a very long time to work like this. But after some practice it does not need so much time and I have absolutely control where I want to have more or less polygons.
The dress with colors applied

I modeled a little collar the same way I modeled the dress.
Extruding edges and moving points :)
A larger image :)

And the thing for the buttons....

I never know what's the english name for it...
In german it's the "Knopfleiste"....
Maybe you can help me and tell me the name of that thing?
Edit:
Jimmie helped me with the name :) It's called "button placket".
The button :)
I had fun to make that button :)
But it's not really necessary to make such detailed buttons for Poser clothes.
It's also possible to make a lot simpler buttons and later add details with
bumpmaps and displacement maps.

Buttons applied to the dress

That's how the dress looks now

Seams and folds
Seams and folds were added.

I modeled a bow :)
The bow was modelled with the box-modeling method. It was also put in a symmetry object - so I only had to make one side.
To make one side of the bow, I used a box, put it in a hypernurbs, deleted two polygons on front and on the back side and used the bridge tool to connect those holes. Then I moved polygon edges and points (vertexes) until all looked nice and smooth.
The knot was done the same way.

So what is the bow for?
The bow is meant to be used on Kali's shoes :)
Usually I start with a base shoe ;) - but this time I started with the bow.
On this image you can see the base mesh for her shoes.

Mesh in hypernurbs object
On this image you can see how it looks like when I put the base mesh into a hypernurbs. All is nice and smooth :)
I usually try to model a mesh with not many triangles. It's not always avoidable.. but the mesh the hypernurbs generates is a lot "cleaner" when I model with quads.

Shoe shape was changed
Unneccessary polygons were deleted, points (vertexes) were moved on the correct places.

A trim was added
I usually add a trim to most edges of the clothes.

Final Shoe
I added the bow and some small spheres as a decoration for the shoes

When all is finished....
When the mapping was ready, I painted the pattern for dress and shoes with Photoshop.
And after that I made the rigging for Poser. Rigging for Poser is a lot of work and it's also not possible to explain that with a few sentences. The correct rigging makes it possible to move the body of the Poser figure and the clothes will follow all movement.
UV Mapping
- UV Mapper
- If you are interested in seeing what "mapping" means, you can have a look at this site. The owner offers a free stand-alone texture mapping utility and you can also have a look at some tutorials.
- Bodypaint 3D
- I'm using Bodypaint 3D (which is included in Cinema) for the mapping
And that's the result :)
I hope you had fun to read this lens and to have a look how such a little Poser clothing set was done.
And on this image you can see the result of my work :)
The image was rendered with Poser 7, FireFly renderer and postwork (background and frame) was added in Photoshop CS3.

Intersting things about Faeries
A fairy (also faery, faerie, fay, fae; euphemistically wee folk, good folk, people of peace, fair folk, etc.)Briggs, Katharine Mary (1976) An Encyclopedia of Fairies. New York, Pantheon Books. "Euphemistic names for fairies" p. 127 ISBN 0-394-73467-X. is a type of mythological being or legendary creature, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural or preternatural.
Fairies resemble various beings of other mythologies, though even folklore that uses the term fairy offers many definitions. Sometimes the term describes any magical creature, including goblins or gnomes: at other times, the term only describes a specific type of more Category: wikt - :ethereal|ethereal creature.Briggs (1976) p. xi.

You want to make Poser clothes too?
"Conforming" means that the clothes are following all movement of the figures.
It's a lot of stuff you need to know when you want to learn it - and it's very
difficult and time consuming to explain all the things you need to know.
But there is help :)
I can highly recommend the following book. It's a book for Poser 5, but I think
all of the informations can be used for all newer Poser versions too. I have it myself, but it's some time ago that I read it.
But I really think you can not do something wrong when you buy that book.
As far as I know it's only available in English.
A little warning from me: It's not very easy to understand for beginners.
When you work through that book you will soon make your own Poser clothes and props :)
