Digital Command Control

Learn about how to control your Model Railway Trains

DCC is a modern way of controlling multiple trains on same track without blocking. A small 'black box', called a controller generates a digital signal sent on the track. The system does not use DC but instead square wave 10 kHz AC. In turn each Loco is equipped with a small, microprocessor controlled received. The controller continuously sends encoded information about speed, direction, etc to each receiver. Generally the systems have a capacity of 127 locos, turnout control and more.
There are several manufacturers complying with NMRA standards.

Digitrax DS54 QUAD decoder

Learn about the DS54

The DS54 is sophisticated stationary decoder for controlling 4 separate outputs and 8 sensor inputs for feedback onto LocoNet. This means you can now operate up to 4 turnouts (or other stationary devices) per decoder. In fact, the DS54 is more properly described as an "animation decoder", since it is capable of far more than a simple stationary decoder.
At first glance the sophistication of the DS54 may be a little intimidating. The DS54 is engineered to give you the basics of stationary decoder control as well as many advanced features that you might not have thought of yet. Never fear, you can use the DS54 as simply a turnout decoder. The factory programmed defaults make the DS54 useable " out of the box" in most systems without the need for any additional programming, configuration or wiring connections. You can use "just as much as you want" of the DS54's basic capabilities, and leave the more advanced features till you find that you need them for a specific task.

DS54 Review

A list of some of the top features of this model railway train controller

4 Multi-purpose high-current output control pairs controllable by standard DCC accessory decoder signals & local control inputs. Outputs can control:

Push-pull solenoid turnout motors e.g. PECO or Atlas "snap" switches

Slow Motion DC Stall turnout motors e.g. Switch Master & Tortoise type products

Incandescent & LED lights for signals & special effects

Other attached devices such as sound modules & DC motors
8 Multi-purpose sensor inputs can be configured for:

Block occupancy detectors, using Digitrax BDI detector modules

Local turnout control

Feedback of turnout position, including "out of position" during changes

General LocoNet system input sensors

Local route control

System Power On/Off & Run /Stop inputs

Cascaded route & turnout control

Signalling system control messages

Local animation control, such as automated indexing Turntable

Multiple aspect control such as automatic Crossing Gate controller

General local control of attached motors, solenoids, lamps etc.

Fully programmable & customizable configurations

Configurations all permanently stored in non-volatile memory
