Model Railway Video Showcase

I have always been fascinated with Model Railways but unfortunately I have never had the space to make my own.

Model Railway building is a hobby that can engulf a lifetime if done right. Building a layout can take years if done correctly, its not just as simple as buying a train set and putting the track together as there are many other things to consider like landscaping and proper track layout.

I have created this video showcase to show you the reader how good model railways can look when they are finished. Enjoy.

Video Clip of Miniatur Wunderland

This is a clip of the Miniatur Wunderland model railway attraction in Hamburg, Germany. It is the largest of its kind in the world. As of January 2008, the railway consists of 11,000 meters of track, divided into five sections: Southern Germany, Hamburg and the coast, America, Scandinavia and Switzerland. Of the 4000 m² of floorspace, the model takes 1,500 m².

Rail Transport Modelling

General Description

Involvement in the hobby can range from the possession of a train set to spending many hours and large sums of money on a large and exactingly executed model of a railroad and the scenery through which it passes, called a "layout". Hobbyists, called "model railroaders" or "railway modellers", may even maintain models large enough to ride (see Live steam, Ridable miniature railway and Backyard railroad). Railway modellers may find enjoyment in collecting model trains, building a miniature landscape for the trains to pass through, or operating their own railroad, albeit in miniature.

Some older scale models reach very high prices.

Layouts vary from the very stylistic (sometimes just a simple circle or oval of track) to the "absolutely realistic", where real places are modelled to scale. One of the largest of these is in the Pendon Museum in Oxfordshire, UK, where an EM gauge (same 1:76.2 scale as 00 but with a more accurate track gauge) model of the Vale of White Horse as it appeared in the 1930s is under construction. The museum also houses one of the earliest scenic models ever made - the 'Madder Valley' layout built by John Ahern. This latter layout was built in the late 1930s to late 1950s and brought in the era of realistic modelling, receiving coverage on both sides of the North Atlantic in the magazines Model Railway News and Model Railroader during the 1940s and 50s. Bekonscot in Buckinghamshire is the oldest model village, and also includes a model railway, dating from the 1930s onward. The world's largest model railroad track in H0 scale is Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany. The largest live steam layout, with over 25 miles (40 km) of trackage is Train Mountain in Chiloquin, Oregon, USA.

Hornby on Wikipedia

Hornby Railways is the leading brand of model railway in the United Kingdom. Its roots date back to 1901, when founder Frank Hornby received a patent for his Meccano construction toy. The first clockwork train was produced in 1920. In 1938 Hornby launched its first 00 gauge train. In 1964, Hornby and Meccano were bought by their competitor Tri-Ang, and sold on when Tri-ang went into receivership. In the 1980s Hornby Railways became independent.

Tri-ang on Wikipedia

Tri-ang Railways was a British manufacturer of toy trains, one of the elements of the Lines Bros Ltd company who traded using the Tri-ang brand name. The Tri-ang Railways name was dropped a few years after Lines Bros took over the Hornby name although the majority of the trains were still the original Tri-ang models.

Marklin Trains on Wikipedia

Be sure to read the rest of this article on Wikipedia as it tells how Marklin was among the first model railway companies to introduce a digital train control system.

Gebr. Märklin & Cie. GmbH or Märklin (MÄRKLIN or MAERKLIN in capital letters) is a German toy company, founded in 1859. Although it originally specialised in doll house accessories, today it is best known for model railways and technical toys. In some parts of Germany, the company's name is almost synonymous with model railroads. Märklin filed for bankruptcy on 4 February 2009.

Tokyo Marui on eBay

Tokyo Marui train sets are a bit expensive and do go against most model railwayer's ethics as they come fully assembled and painted. Thus saying, if you like model railways and you don't want to go through all the palaver of building it yourself, Tokyo Maru sets are the ones to go for.

Model Railway Village, Southport

I recently visited the Model Railway Village in Southport, Merseyside, UK. Unfortunately I only had my digital camera with me but I did shoot some nice video, the quality is down because of the low resolution of video shooting with a digital camera but it still came out okay.
