For Those Who Are New To Train Modelling

How to model your first train layout as a newcomer to the hobby is always a big challenge, not least the question uppermost in your mind is where do I begin.

There is some planning needed before you start you first layout, such as where are you going to situate your layout? Is it going to be just for you, or will you be sharing it with friends?

How many tracks and trains will it have? Remember, you will need the space to be able to move around your table layout. You do not want to have to lean across any part of it in order to reach something. The track should be no more than twenty four inches from the edge of the table. You do not want the track to fall on the floor.

It is questions like these which beginners and intermediate train modellers need the answers to, and this lens addresses these issues.

Model Train Track Layout - How Big Should It Be?

Model Train Layout For Beginners

So you decided to go ahead with your ambition to build a model train layout but the problem is you do not know how big it needs to be. There is only so much space you can spare to situate your layout and then there is the cost of it.

That will depend on the amount of money you allow yourself to spend on the hobby.

If you work on your room size, you should allow up to two feet of floor space to be able to get around the table. Call this working space around a table size of 4 feet bt 10 feet in dimension.

If one sied of the layout is against the wall, you are then limited to the shape of the track you can have.

On the shape of the proposed layout, be aware that a circular track where you trains only go round and round will get boring after a while, so a more interesting and realistic layout is a better option from the start.

Model Train Layout - Tools Needed

Model Train Track Tools For The Job

Basically if you think carpenter or woodworking then the range of tools needed for those occupations are what you need for train modelling. Not the whole range of course, but you do need an electric drill, soldering equipment, hand tools.

You might prefer to choose cordless equipment if you do not have ready access to a power socket.

If you have some basic skills with electrical circuits, they will come in handy as well

Train Layout Scenery And Planning

Rather than rush into a train layout you might later regret and you might wish you had chosen something different which you had not thought of at the time, it is best to make the layout in small steps and then test it as you go along.

First, decide on the size of table you want, and then paint the table top either brown or dark green. Lay the track and run the trains until you are satisfied with the design.

Then you can introduce some scenery, but not all at once. Decide where you want the roads and streets and together with those you need to plan where you want to site the buildings. Paint the roads in a dark colour. Then think about where other landscape features are going to go. Hills, lakes and tunnels might be a part of the layout.

When you are ready for the buildings to be placed, make sure you move them around to start with until you find the best location for each as a more permanent
siting.

Well what is a model train layout? Well a model train layout is where track and accessories such as trees, people, and buildings are laid on a surface in a configuration. This is to provide realism in the layout because most modellers choose to model in prototype. Prototype means the real thing. The real railways in the world. How do the modellers make the layout? Well this will be explained further in the article. In this article there will be facts on model train layouts, gauges, scales, what to choose and where to start.

Great start for those wanting to get into model railroading. I find either the O scale or HO scale trains to be the best for beginners. HO scale is by far the most popular, because it gives you a great amount of detail in a small size, and you can do more with less space. I recommend Bachmann model trains as a good company for trains.

Beginners tend to buy an electric train set off the shelf of their local hobby shop, and then try and expand it into the model train layouts they have seen at a model railway show.

That can be a recipe for disaster. Planning is the most important step to having a model railroad that works well.
