Be a kid again!

My family loves the Polar Express movie during the Christmas season. After watching this classic, I wanted to be a real live train conductor. The only problem was where to put a locomotive that big. So, we did the next best thing, we explored the world of Model Trains.

We did have some experience with trains: a wooden Thomas the Tank Engine set, which has been used for many imaginative train adventures. But, our kids are getting older and Thomas just isn't the Polar Express.

So after much searching on Google, we found our Polar Express model train, online. Prices very quite a bit, so check your local Hobby stores, E-bay, and online stores.

I didn't realize the enormous world of model trains. Locomotives can sell from $100 to over $1000.  We learned a lot about the different size trains and track.

We are not experts by any means. So please check out the links below to get you started. You won't be disappointed to recapture your childhood all over again.

Marklin Trains
Marklin trains are some of the highest quality model trains you can buy. Made in Germany, Marklin model trains represent a higher level of detail and much better run characteristics than cheaper 'toy trains' -- they run more smoothly at varying speeds, without jerking and stopping at slower speeds.
Lionel Trains
Lionel Trains are the quintessential American electric trains. Most Lionel Trains are modeled in O scale (1/43 of actual size), which is twice as large as HO scale (HO stands for 'Half-O) but still not as large as G scale. Lionel does produce some sets in G scale, but those are mostly Christmas sets.

Hi there - thanks for creating this lens - it's a great resource. I particularly enjoyed the videos and images - the books you recommend also look interesting - I'll have to take a read. I've recently started a new Toy Model Trains blog - check it out if you get a chance.

A good selection of informative links. I haven't seen the Polar Express film, which I gather is good. Do you have a link gives a synopsis on it? New members have joined the Railway Enthusiasts Group that you may wish to check out.
