Top Ten Reasons an American Collapse/Revolution is Coming
Ranked #10,560 in Culture & Society, #214,292 overall
Signs of the Coming End and Methods for Positive Transformation
Some of the problems listed here are uniquely American. Many are not. In our intimately interconnected world, the troubles of the United States are often the troubles of the West in general, and they significantly affect the majority of the world in which 80% of the global population survives on less that $10.00 a day. Similarly, the true advances and break throughs of individuals, when shared openly, will benefit all of mankind.
Many will view the coming collapse and revolutionary change as something negative. Unless humanity embraces a more loving, enlightened, or spiritually awakened view, the coming transformation will likely be quite destructive. This is certainly frightening to contemplate. Perhaps the more we accept the fact that this massive shift is coming, one which will likely occur on a global scale, the less scary it will be, and the better able we will be to direct it in a more positive light. The longer we remain in denial of the coming inevitable collapse or revolution, or the longer we do nothing to prepare for it and shape it positively, the more painful it will likely be.
The information provided on this page may seem overwhelming, but it is critical that we have an understanding of where we are and what options we have going forward. It is therefore of utmost importance that if you find this information to be useful or eyeopening to pass it along to others who would also benefit.
In the end, what is most important is that we as humans recognize our ability to connect to the universe and each other, to express love, and to do beautiful things. It is my belief that our faith and connection to a Higher Power or a positive and realistic relationship with the wondrous and mysterious natural world and the Universe at large will be what saves us. By saving us, I do not mean preserving society as we know it. We are entering a period in which the old world dies and a new one is born. It will soon become clear to you, if it is not already, that industrial civilization is about to suffer what may be a mortal blow. Apathy in the face of the world's problems will be the course for those who do not wish to adapt or continue on living. There are many specific developments taking place right now that urge us to begin waking up. Our actions in the material world are a direct reflection of our spiritual, intellectual, moral, and emotional maturity.
Please leave your thoughts on the guest book at the bottom of the page.
As we saw with 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the economic meltdown, those in power who we have charged with leading us through hard times are not only incapable of doing so compentently, but are often significant contributors to the calamities themselves.
Citizen's United v Federal Election Commission
Actions:
- Inform people about this landmark supreme court decision.
- Do not allow yourself to be influenced by political advertisements, whether positive or negative.
- If you do vote, when possible vote for third party candidates or candidates who run on a platform of refusing large corporate support.
- Realize that in the words of Ammon Hennacy, voting with your body, ie your life, your career, your actions, is a far more powerful way to vote than at the ballot box. In fact, in our current situation, it is probably the only meaningful means of participation.
Corporate Media Consolidation
Media consolidation is a huge issue, because those who control the media that the majority of people consume will clearly control their understanding of reality and thus their ability to live free and shape their future. Without a strong media, public ignorance, apathy, and decadence perpetuated through the propaganda of the mainstream news will eventually lead to widespread revolt, potentially violent, when the corporate spun fantasies are shattered and the reality of living under a system that is inherently violent and oppressive becomes apparent.
Actions:
- Seek information from a variety of sources which do not all agree with one another. While you will likely form a specific opinion about a particular matter, it is important to understand the rationale of several perspectives.
- Don't assume common knowledge is correct knowledge, even if that common knowledge comes from within a fringe organization. Question generalizations and sound byte rhetoric.
- Consume alternative, non corporate media, and financially support those outlets you believe are contributing to a deeper understanding of reality.
- Once you are thoroughly convinced of the brokenness of the system and how it cannot be fixed with the same consciousness that created it, focus less on news and more on transformation.
You are much larger, much greater than the images shown to you on your television screen. You deserve a truly beautiful world to live in.
The Fabricated War on Terrorism
Actions:
- Oppose the coming war with Iran, and make sure politicians understand this opposition now before they move any further toward instigating the next war
- Watch the following videos and pass them along if they strike you

Rampant Government Corruption
One of the most significant recent examples of political corruption is the largely forgotten incident involving American citizen and Swiss bank employee Bradley Birkenfeld, who helped a handful of around eighteen thousand US millionaires and billionaires who were similarly aided in evading taxes by criminally hiding their assets from the IRS at UBS. When Birkenfeld stepped forward to reveal the felonies of the upper crust, rather than being given whistle blower status, he was the only one to be criminally charged. The Obama administration made a deal with the eighteen thousand elite United States felons, declaring that they would not go to prison, nor would their identities be revealed. All they had to to do was report their accounts to the government and pay a fine. How likely is it that these trillions of dollars have turned up in other accounts in other forms in order to evade paying taxes? It is highly probable among these criminals are the very bankers, politicians, and hedge fund managers who caused the financial collapse. Keep in mind this is also the same group of people who continually lobby to ensure that their tax cuts remain in play, in spite of financial hard times for average Americans.
The US government, both Liberal and Conservative, has been deeply corrupted by wealthy corporate and banking interests. While common wisdom suggests that "money makes the world go round," this phrase indicates a system that is morally and spiritually bankrupt at its core. In all practicality the individuals who make up this system worship the illuminated all seeing pyramid dollar bill as an idol which they place above the value of humanity, and as such this society will undoubtedly fail.
Actions
- Wake people up to the fact that the system is hopelessly corrupt, run literally by criminals who are either fighting amongst themselves for power or covering for each other for power. Understand that these people have the monopoly on money, resources, weaponry, and legalized violence, and realize that this will likely lead to more major catastrophes.
- Realize that politicians cannot be trusted and must EITHER be closely watched if one is to continue embracing the current failing system, or ABANDONED ALTOGETHER in favor of the new free societies which you establish.
- Start exploring systems of living, acting, and interacting which are beyond the traditional monetary system.
Escalating Social Tensions
When the Left and Libertarian anti war movement labeled George Bush a fascist, it was in the context of peaceful defiance. Today we hear the rumblings of a different sort of discontent. The Right wing is no longer a Conservative party of international isolation, but one of State power, administered not through bureaucratic social programs, but through force and secrecy, which many high level Democrats implicitly support. The vocal right wing supporters of the violent order deal in the language of force, and as such are well armed, angry, and busily labeling their political opponents as terrorists. Enough pressure could and has pushed these types into violent action against members of their own country.
Religion also has a major role to play, pitting Christians, Jews, and Muslims against one another. Muslims are bearing the brunt of hatred directed against a religious group in the United States, leading around seventy percent of Americans to disregard their own Constitution and oppose the construction of a mosque a few blocks away from ground zero. With over a million Muslims living in the United States, the sentiment that all Muslims are terrorists, or even that all terrorists are Muslim, is leading to increasing tensions, and has led to such flash points as the Dove Ministries' pastor Terry Jones calling for a Koran burning, an action which fortunately was widely criticized and never came about. At the same time, Muslim extremists are being indoctrinated, though it often remains difficult to ascertain their immediate threat, as in the case of the Oregon teenager whose failed bomb plot was largely instigated by the FBI. It is clear that religious tensions will undoubtedly remain high and play a significant role in social fragmentation and the breakdown of America as we know it.
The perceived need for armed resistance, however, is not simply the purview of religious fanatics and the Right, though they certainly deserve a lot of credit. With the pressures of environmental destruction and global warming building, there may also be violent elements on the Left who reveal themselves in the coming years. Some who fear the upcoming disasters caused by Climate Change, like those who see a looming communist one world order emerging, are also fighting for their perceived survival. Although on the Left, activists often appeal to Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, and Martin Luther King, there are a handful who might resort to violence in this highly polarized society which is patently incapable of making the structural changes necessary to protect the environment in a meaningful way.
Actions
- Talk to people and demonstrate that while it is possible to disagree, you can still do so without violence.
- Recognize the potential for mass violence and begin preparing yourself for self defense in whatever way you see most appropriate.
The Growing Social Divide in America
responding to a poster on Yahoo
"This scum and all of those who assisted [Julian Assange] must be brought down. I have friends and relatives fighting for this country and even for the freedom of all you people who support this terrorist. You are supporting a person who has placed my friends in harm's way. Are you all so stupid that you do not know that people like me will not stand for this? We are the "good old boys" We have the weapons and we will not stand for it. If you are so strong in your beliefs then be prepared to die for them. I am prepared to die for mine. I joined the Marines because I was ready to die for my country. I still am!! My wife believes we will have a civil war here within the next few years to keep from becoming a Socialist country. I will be a fighter in that war as will every real American that believes in the freedoms that our founders envisioned will be there as well. We will take back this wonderful country from the likes of the Eric Holders and Hussein Osama's."
One could easily dismiss statements like these as being fringe or having little force behind them, but they represent commonly held sentiments across the nation, readily expressed on the Internet. People like this angry, scared, and alienated poster are struggling to find like minded individuals so that they can deal the hand of earthly retribution they so desire. In the short term, the government will respond to domestic challenges by tightening its control and eviscerating civil liberties. Once momentum builds, the situation has the potential to become one violent self fulfilling prophecy after another, and this potential is what must be transformed before it manifests.
We have to understand that the government and media are planting the seeds of violent rebellion into the minds of people like this, and though they may initially denounce violence or distance themselves from such individuals, they are at the same time instigating them to higher levels of desperation. The Neoconservatives are doing this by playing two sides of the game: spouting anti government rhetoric while using their governmental authority to ensure economic, social, and environmental instability, while Democrats flounder, compromise, and capitulate. The poster's comments are the logical extension of widely held beliefs that Obama is a crypto Muslim terrorist named Barry Sotero, born in Kenya, health care reform was about creating death panels to kill Grandma, and Global Warming is a scam to install the New World Order communist government. The rhetoric of a coming world communism brought about by Obama and the Democrats, of course, ignores and intentionally obfuscates the violent, repressive, and highly concentrated and extremely wealthy and entrenched power centers that ALREADY existed before Obama took office and that are currently destroying the planet and enslaving humanity. The call to violently resist this supposed coming "communism" in a way that simply lends force to a Republican corporatist and militarist agenda is in fact a way to expand the preexisting violent order through a mechanism of divide, conquer, and appropriate.
The angry and disaffected Right may very well gain the presidency in the next election, which will provide the necessary momentum to escalate the wars and global antagonism that became obvious during Bush's reign and were carried over into Obama's. Lacking any means to reinvigorate the economy or any desire to protect the environment, the Right will further enrich the wealthy and continue to turn the anger of the nation they are impoverishing against foreigners and dissidents.
Should the Right be unable to capture the White House in 2012, there may be an eventual response to the patriotic call to "water the tree of liberty with the blood of patriots and tyrants." If rebellion comes about, the right wing elites will either side with the uprising if by some small chance the momentum is in their favor and a military coup seems possible, or they will more likely stand by as the "Federal Government" crushes the citizenry in the name of counter terrorism. Should such a scenario unfold, military fascists, having failed to take control of the US through the ballot, will have fueled the very violent conflicts which will assure their ascendancy no matter what the result, as the public demands the order and "sanity" of an armed Police State.
Food Insecurity
"Early 20th century agriculture was labor intensive, and it took place on a large number of small, diversified farms in rural areas where more than half of the U.S. population lived. These farms employed close to half of the U.S. workforce, along with 22 million work animals, and produced an average of five different commodities. The agricultural sector of the 21st century, on the other hand, is concentrated on a small number of large, specialized farms in rural areas where less than a fourth of the U.S. population lives. These highly productive and mechanized farms employ a tiny share of U.S. workers and use 5 million tractors in place of the horses and mules of earlier days."
While the Department of Agriculture touts the highly efficient system of agricultural production, it fails to mention several key points. A diverse and decentralized system of farming allows individuals to have greater control over their food supply. Large scale disruptions such as hyper inflation and the increasing cost of food, disease outbreak, "terrorism", high fuel prices, and war will have less significant effects on locales with thriving local agricultural economies and extensive backyard and community gardens. During the first Great Depression in the thirties, around twenty percent of Americans farmed, and therefore could provide for the food needs of themselves and their communities, even with an extremely difficult economy. Today, only around 1 percent of Americans farm. People have ceded their own right and responsibility to literally feed themselves to large scale corporate agribusiness. The result is that when the next major disaster occurs, economic or otherwise, people will not be able to provide for themselves, and when the grocery store shelves go bare, citizens of so called advanced societies will be at the mercy of the government, the corporation, and the gun.
The other thing that a model of pure efficiency doesn't take into account is the toll that such a system places on the environment. Soils in the US are largely depleted of nutritional value, pesticide and fertilizer usage continue to disrupt the environment. Massive dead zones like the one off the Gulf Coast, in which very little life can survive, are due to the highly concentrated agricultural runoff from the Mississippi River.
Meanwhile, agricultural chemical giant Monsanto is in the process of patenting the genetic material of seeds and genetically modifying crops, turning food into their intellectual property in order to eliminate biodiversity and agricultural resiliency in favor of productivity and most importantly power and profit. If left unchecked, Monsanto will control the majority of the food supply of the world, making life for humans extremely difficult, and social breakdown extremely likely.
- Learn to grow your own organic biointensive / permaculture food, raise chickens or other livestock, and save seeds for the next harvest.
- Learn how to harvest rainwater.
- Assess your city or town's capacity to produce food. Support local farms, community gardens, neighborhood gardens, rooftop gardens, CSA's, and co-ops.
- Boycott Monsanto products, such as Roundup pesticides, and avoid non organic varieties of the following: corn (high fructose corn syrup), soy (soy lecithin in chocolate), cotton, sugar beet sugar, and canola, which are almost entirely genetically modified and are likely the products of Monsanto. Tell congress you will not eat genetically modified wheat and rice, which are the next major staple crops to be modified.
- Keep at the very least one month's supply of food on hand.
Knowledge is empowerment. You don't have to live at the mercy of large corporations and lying politicians any more.

Social Belief in and Desire for Collapse
A Survey of the End of America
Peak Oil
Peak oil was reached in 1970 in the US, when production hit it's maximum and then began a decline. People are unsure of when peak oil will hit globally, but some suspect it will happen this century, while others point to the peak being passed in the next few years. While optimists often suggest we have centuries of oil and coal resources still in the ground, as you will see in Dr. Albert A. Bartlett's video below, these calculations generally do not reflect the growing global population, the growing demand for fossil fuels and plastics within the population, and as Richard Heinberg points out, the increasing difficulty in extracting energy resources as the most easily obtainable portions have already been exploited.
While certainly government control of population through draconian child birth laws would go hand in hand with totalitarianism, the world is a finite place with finite resources, and we need to face this realistically. It is quite possible that the coming collapse will eliminate a large number of people from the planet. This is not a desired outcome, but given the volatility of the world, it remains an unfortunate possibility, and it is something that the world elites, in many cases with our own complicity, are pushing us toward. It is for this reason that we must be as clear as possible about what is going on in the world and how we will survive, because the more awakened humans that make it through the coming hardships, the better the chances we will have of establishing societies along more peaceful, democratic, and equitable lines in the future.
- reduce consumption of plastics, increase fuel efficiency of vehicles
- contact congress about pushing for the subsidization of alternative energy and moving toward a less fossil fuel dependent economy, but realize that they are being paid by the fossil fuel industry to maintain the status quo, creating myths like "clean coal"
- localize the economy

Environmental Destabilization
But not everyone believes in climate change, and the denial of this change is actually leading to the demonization of science and the labeling of environmentally concerned Americans as terrorists. Thus climate change is destabilizing the United States in more than one way. This societal destabilization, as was already pointed out, may aid in cementing a fascist police state demanded to reinstate stability in the midst of chaos.
For those who don't believe in human induced climate change, it is important to at least understand other scientifically accepted but widely glossed over environmentally destabilizing factors currently in effect. Coupled with climate change, or even taken on their own, these growing problems will cause disruptions in our living systems powerful enough to cause the collapse of society.
- Ocean Acidification: CO2 is not only changing the climate, but it is without a doubt being absorbed into the ocean and lowering its pH. The acidification of the ocean will likely negatively impact organisms that use calcification to produce an outer shell, such as corals and shellfish.
- Dead Zones: Agricultural runoff is making it nearly impossible for life to continue in large areas such as the 8,500 square mile region off the coast of the Mississippi in the Gulf of Mexico. Agricultural fertilizers create massive algal blooms, which in turn starve these dead zones of oxygen, preventing normal ecosystem functioning.
- Colony Collapse Disorder: Honey bees, an extremely important pollinator for agricultural crops, have not rebounded from the colony collapse disorder in the US. Though no specific cause has been determined, overuse of pesticides and the stresses of colony transport currently required by "efficient" industrial agriculture are thought to be major contributors to the collapse. Their decline will continue to reduce agricultural yields.
- White Nose Syndrome: American bats are dying by the hundreds of thousands at the hands of white nose syndrome, a disease which causes bats to lose body fat and awaken during hibernation, at which point they die of starvation or freeze to death when searching for food. White nose syndrome is spreading across the US and often kills between 90%-100% of bats in a hibernaculum, leading ecologists to see this as one of the gravest threats to a particular animal species in the US. Bats contribute to widespread pest control, and their extinction will likely lead to increased agricultural crop losses and an increase use of pesticides, which will likely further impact honeybees as well as humans.
- Pine Beetle: Whether or not you believe global warming is human caused, the fact that there are fewer days each winter that are below freezing is leading to the explosion of pine beetle populations that are not being killed off in the colder months of the year. In the North West, and up into Canada, this is leading to some pine forested areas losing 70% or more of their pine trees, leaving behind large expanses of standing dead trees with brown needles.
- Invasive Weeds: Due to large land disturbances caused by construction sites and the grazing of livestock, invasive weed species are crowding out native plant species across the US. Weeds such as spotted and diffuse knapweed secrete natural herbicides which actually kill off surrounding plants, making an infestation particularly difficult to control, transforming large grass lands into massive weed lots. The loss of native plant species creates a reduction in food available to native animal species and thus weeds have the potential to significantly disrupt local ecological systems.
- Overfishing: Overfishing.org states that according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, "a total of almost 80% of the world's fisheries are fully- to over-exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse. Worldwide about 90% of the stocks of large predatory fish stocks are already gone." This is significant in it's effects on the stability of the ocean ecosystem, as well as the human economy and food supply.
Financial Collapse
A quote from "The Anatomy of Revolution," a book that surveys the English, American, French, and Russian Revolutions, tells us that "James C. Davies in the American Sociological Review (Volume XXVII) suggests that what provokes a group to attack a government is not simply deprivation or misery, but 'an intolerable gap between what people want and what they get," and that revolutions often come during economic depressions which follow on periods of generally rising standards of living."
The notion of "too big to fail" which led to the bailouts has not been resolved. Hedge fund managers, high level bankers, and wall street investors will continue to look for and create risky and fraudulent financial schemes to increase their wealth, with no regard for how it will effect average people around the world. Our financial system is propelled by reckless and criminal greed, and it is only a matter of time before more significant disruptions emerge. With Wikileak's Julian Assange poised to release scandalous information on a major US bank in the near future, we have yet another reason to prepare for rough seas on the financial markets.
The following video series details the likelihood of an extreme economic meltdown, which would represent an extraordinary plunge following on the economic gains of the twentieth century, creating, according to The Anatomy of Revolution, the perfect storm for widespread revolt.
Actions:
- Consider investing in precious metals.
- Keep at the very least a one month supply of food on hand.
